The decision to quit the bloc of 15 oil-producing countries that account for almost half of the world's oil production was confirmed by Qatar Petroleum, the country's state oil company.

Just breaking now. This has HUGE implications, considering Qatar’s radicalism, the near war with Saudi Arabia, etc.

I guess the commodities market is going to react by driving my gas prices higher.

At least for the short term. Hard to predict what commodities markets will do.

My first thought is a new cartel to compete with OPEC.
Qatar, Venezuela, Iran, and Indonesia??

I don’t see why this should make prices go up. If they are leaving maybe they want to pump more than OPEC allows them to pump.

Competition is what OPEC was created to end. Rival cartels defeats the purpose which is to set artificially high prices.

There you go, lower energy prices. OPEC is a hollow shell.

Precisely. :^) Ages ago, or rather, even ages ago, when I was in college, one of the econ profs (he was a big deal back then, although he only worked in the Carter White House) mentioned in lecture that cartels don't normally last as long as OPEC had by then (it was formed around 1960 I think), and for their duration they tend to "leak" because members want to cheat, whether they are national entities or individual companies.

Agreed. This seems good news of the energy markets having busted out beyond OPEC.

VERY good news..!

If not for US fracking I’m not sure we’d be seeing this now.

For the younger crowd, being stuck in gas lines was no fun. That was OPEC. It was especially not fun when it was an odd day and you had an even license plate and were in another state trying to get back home.

OPEC sucks, and this will help kill OPEC.

No OPEC country binds itself by OPEC edicts if it goes against their self-interest, ever.

IE, they all cheat.
