Sen. Rand Paul holding up US aid to Israel

Republican Sen. Rand Paul blocking codification of Obama-era military deal with Israel.

Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is blocking U.S. military aid to Israel.

Paul, who has previously called to cut defense assistance to Israel, recently put a hold on the U.S.-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, which codifies into law the $38 billion defense aid package for Israel over 10 years that was negotiated in the final days of the Obama administration.

A hold is a parliamentary procedure that allows senators to prevent a motion from reaching a floor vote.

The Senate passed the act in early August; the House of Representatives followed suit the following month. Now the Senate must pass a final version in line with the bill passed by the House.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, has bought advertisements on Facebook identifying Paul as the main force blocking the act, the Washington Free Beacon reported, citing what it called sources close to the effort.

Meanwhile, Christians United for Israel, or CUFI, sent out an Action Alert email blast on Monday to its supporters calling on them to flood Paul’s office with calls and letters encouraging him to support the legislation. CUFI also invested heavily in ads in Kentucky to target the senator’s constituents directly on the issue, the Free Beacon reported.

I'm sure he's opposed to all foreign aid, though I don't recall him ever putting a hold on a foreign aid bill. Earlier this year he did put a hold on a bill providing aid to Christians and Yazidis who suffered harm from ISIS in Syria and Iraq, so I guess he's on the virtuous side.

Rand Paul will regret this. I’m glad he’s in the Senate and that he’s not a (D); but here he goes again.

I don’t get the Libertarian position on Israel (and I know it’s not universal; but close).

Strange things befall those who work against Israel’s security.

To say the least :)

I am not sure what his reasons are but if they are not good ones, he will once again prove that he is the perennial back up QB.

He has his great games and then his Terrible games, Never consistent enough to be a starter.

Being the first to say that Slick Willy’s rapes SHOULD be part of the discussion in the 2016 race.

But THEN meeting with A@@ Sharpton.

Then he’ll be one of only 2 or 3 R senators standing on the right side of controversial issue.

Then he’ll do something like withhold Israel Aid.

Like I said, the ultimate backup QB.

Never first string.

Keep in mind that establishment Republicans wouldn't be elected to as much as local dog catcher without anti-globalist Deplorables with a Libertarian bent.

I'm both a Deplorable and a Rand Paul Republican. You can't win without us, so try to understand how a lot of us feel about our involvement in foreign endeavors which promote wars.

Uneducated white deplorable here. I don’t know much about the whole deal but I agree with President Trump when he says some of these countries should be paying for their own defense.

Investing in Israeli military is like investing in forward-placed US military.

And, no, Israel doesn’t get the most aid. When you count direct military spending, Europe, Japan, and Korea all get a much more money.

The only difference is the Israelis supply their own lives and blood.

I really don’t believe Israel starts wars...Yes, they have finished a couple....

I do not see the problem Americans have with Israelis and Jewish people...

Shouldn’t be giving any money to any country.

I DO try to understand (thanks for your measured response). I realize that we need all segments of conservatism to win, so on that score, I’m appreciative.

The Republicans sure do make a wonderful circular firing squad. I’ll vote for Trump again if he bothers to run. Probably be my only and last vote.

Shouldn’t be giving any money to any country.

Exactly, and that INCLUDES Israel.

Foreign and military aid should be treaty-based.

In before I get called an anti-Semite.

"I don’t get the Libertarian position on Israel (and I know it’s not universal; but close).

Libertarians are always first to scream about God given rights, and last to acknowledge God's command to support his chosen people (literal earthly family).

38 Billion to another country made into law.
I wouldn’t mind it if we could find money for our own wall.
Whom do our politicians really work for?

“Investing in Israeli military is like investing in forward-placed US military.”

Except they never have helped us in our wars over there. I understand the reasons why they can’t for political reasons having to do with our Arab “allies”, but they aren’t there to help us out. It’s a far cry from being “forward-placed US military”.

Israel is an important ally to the US in the war against Muslim terrorism.

We need to help them.

I don’t get the Libertarian position on Israel

Then you should read Washington's Farewel Address.

I don't get the freeloader position that the U.S. should borrow billions, pay the interest into perpetuity, all for the benefit of foreign nations.

$38 billion for Israel, how much for the wall?
