Who would have thunk it, someone who has lived and worked there all their lives would know more about Polar Bears than Al Gore??

“someone who has lived and worked there all their lives would know more about Polar Bears”

Innuit culture keeps a very close eye on polar bears. Although they have a generic word for “polar bear” (nanuq, Anglicized as nanook), their custom is to give individual names to each bear in their area. They follow their movements closely, and everyone reports to each other anything they notice about the bears. They always have to be alert against attacks, and have traditional wisdom about when they need to go hunt a bear that is getting too close.

You absolutely cannot live with polar bears close by, like you can with black bears - or even like lions in Africa. Polar bears will pretty reliably hunt any human they catch scent or sight of. They are the single most dangerous predator to humans on Earth.
