Why can we call the Democrats taking the House this early? Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked analyst Chris Stirewalt. Because were just that good, Stirewalt replied with a proud smirk.
That just about sums up Foxs election coverage of the 2018 midterms. It was a self-indulgent display of self-promotion, bickering, and irresponsibility as the entire House was called before polls in the western part of the country had even closed. One has to wonder how many people were deterred from voting when they heard Republicans had already lost the House.
There was a time when news media covered elections without needing to be the first horse out of the gate with results. Reporters would patiently wait for polls to close, for the numbers to be tallied, and for a clear winner to be tabulated. That changed with exit polling and guesses about whether these reflected what really happened inside the voting booths.
Last night, Fox News jumped the shark. They had a new system they claimed would deliver unprecedented accuracy -- they used voters surveys along with the APs race results to predict outcomes. With this methodology, they called the House before anyone else -- to the anger of many viewers.
With just two gains by Democrats and still early in the evening, Baier suddenly announced that the Democrats had taken the House. Not we project that theyve taken the House (an addition they made later after, no doubt because complaints flooded their phone lines). Not simply we think this will be a good night for the Democrats based on our analysis. Nope, they jumped ahead in time and declared it as if it had already occurred -- with many people not even voting yet.

Felt the same way when their after 7 panel was Juan Williams, Princess Dana, and ditsy blond Marie H. I wanted serious adults and they were jokesters. Enjoyed it better on Fox Business, until that bomb-of-a-call exploded.
Stirewalt coming out grinning saying, The Democrats have taken the House! When his own frigging graphic says +2 was astonishingly stupid. If he has that little situational awareness he is just a Darwin Award waiting to happen.
I can’t stand that pompous, pig faced ass!! I turn the channel when he comes on......;(
Fox Business is still pretty good.
calling the house when crucial races were still being voted on on the west coast was disgusting and unethical.
agreed
Faux is the new Megan Kelly.
I watched no TV coverage.
But I remember hearing that the new regime at Fox has the owners’ younger heirs trying to make nice with the Chelsea Clinton types and fit in at the amiable and fashionable liberal cocktail parties. And get close to the Hollywood star side of the business. A lot of kissing up to do in a short time.
Meanwhile: we don’t like Fox any longer is the theme I see on posts here. Good choice. I agree.
OAN is what we watch now
Yes. I thought there was a rule about that. Apparently if it exists it was broken or unenforceable.
Didn’t they used to wait until the polls closed in the West?
The real story...
How can they prove that their predictions were accurate when their predictions may have actually been the cause of the Republicans losing the House?
Use OAN as one of your information sources. Depend less on the cable networks, they are more interested in ratings and not the news.
This reminds me of why we canceled DISH last year. Local news and radio occasionally, but mostly online news. Much happier knowing my money does not support these clowns.
You're forgetting the Saudis, the Bush family, NFL, Wall Street, Australia, nutrisystem and that phony POS Brett Baier.
They need to b CNN'd.
Last week Fox News reported on the Pittsburgh Synagogue saying the shooter was mentally unstable. In the same story they referred to the guy that mailed the plastic pipe bombs as a Trump supporter.
The WORST election coverage by far and that includes the other fake news outlets. Calling races and their asinine predictions were obnoxious.
Was trying to watch Fox to get info on Sessions firing and saw their All Star Panel, one NPR hack, one Washington Post stooge and some other person. Screw Fox, I can get all that Fox offers by listening to Hannitys radio show.
For two days now, FOX has focused on Trump’s “tone”. Oooh, it’s so harsh! Oooh, I don’t want that in my house! Oooh, it’s so off putting! How many fence sitters did FOX turn demonrat at the polls?
Then, Shep couldn’t get TX poll times correct. How many Republicans got in line after 7pm and it was closed? Seems suspicious. Third time was the charm but that was at the end of his show.
Stirewalt. I hate that guy!
