Cesar Sayoc’s Path on Social Media: From Food Photos to Partisan Fury
New York Times ^ | October 27, 2018 | Kevin Roose

Posted on 10/27/2018 9:47:40 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Until 2016, Cesar Altieri Sayoc Jr.’s life on social media looked unremarkable. On his Facebook page, he posted photos of decadent meals, gym workouts, scantily clad women and sports games — the stereotypical trappings of middle-age masculinity.

But that year, Mr. Sayoc’s social media presence took on a darker and more partisan tone. He opened a new Twitter account and began posting links to sensational right-wing news stories, adding captions like “Clinton busted exposed rigging entire election.” On Facebook, his anodyne posts gave way to a feed overflowing with pro-Donald Trump images, news stories about Muslims and the Islamic State, far-fetched conspiracy theories and clips from Fox News broadcasts.

By the time he was arrested in Florida on Friday, charged with sending pipe bombs to at least a dozen of President Trump’s critics, Mr. Sayoc appeared to fit the all-too-familiar profile of a modern extremist, radicalized online and sucked into a vortex of partisan furor. In recent weeks, he had posted violent fantasies and threats against several people to whom pipe bombs were addressed, including Representative Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, and former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. His vehicle, a white van plastered with right-wing slogans, came to resemble a Facebook feed on wheels.

“He went from posting pictures of women, real estate, dining and cars to posting pictures of ISIS, guns and people in jail,” said Jonathan Albright, the research director for Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. “It’s a remarkable change.”

...

But before Mr. Sayoc’s accounts were taken down, The New York Times archived their contents. And a closer study of his online activity reveals the evolution of a political identity built on a foundation of false news and misinformation, and steeped in the insular culture of the right-wing media.

the relevant vocabulary missing from the MSM in coverage of sayoc is “false flag operation.”

Sounds like he was an easy mark for the Dems...pay the guy and he'll jump off the brooklyn bridge.

Wonder who made the bombs....My gut says it wasn't him.

"No he’s a crazy man who has a history of roid rage."

With a criminal record - including bomb threats - extending back years before Trump became a political figure. The Times is despicable.

His cover being steroid injecting crazy meathead living in a crazy van covered in stickers for years and going from one arrest to another?

Wow, he's really, really good.

Did the NYT write any pieces like this about the Steve Scalise shooter?

It’s pretty irresponsible of them not to mention Sayoc’s 2012 bomb threats. Those weren’t posted on his social media and so could be seen as outside the scope of the article, but please. They clearly point to him having a screw loose well before Trump came along.

Sounds like a disgruntled customer.

Gee, no liberal bias there, eh NYT? They pump this propaganda all the time and ignore the pure garbage that comes from CNN and MSNBC, creating the raging Democrats out there.

Check this out showing his fake facebooks and other social media. The interesting part is toward the end where she shows an American version of the Cesar character who focuses on anti-democrat and compares it to the British character who focuses on ISIS.

While I would like to have seen this guy knows to the loony left, I can still take pride in the fact that he is an exception, not the rule.

When compared to the violent, deadly and hateful acts of people who claim to be democrats, liberal or
progressive far out number those associated with conservatism.

Believe it or not, a crazed steroid injecting meathead mailing bombs is just a crazed steroid injecting meathead mailing bombs.

But keep hunting around for fellow crazies on YouTube with vast sweeping conspiracy theories.

Somewhere out there, right now, there is someone who:

He opened a new Twitter account and began posting links to sensational LEFT-wing news stories...

MANY of THESE stories written and published in the New York Times.

We don't NEED the NYT lecturing us on this issue when THEY are part of the PROBLEM.

As Jesus said, why do you complain about the speck in your brother's eye but not notice the LOG in your OWN eye?

WE simply CANNOT let them get away with their accusations of which they are just as guilty of, if not MORE, than those they accuse.

"But keep hunting around for fellow crazies on YouTube with vast sweeping conspiracy theories."

From the film "JFK" to the TV series "The X-Files" and going forward, the public has been conditioned to believe in vast conspiracies involving our own government, so is it surprising that so many people these days are conspiracy-minded?

People like to believe that the world is rational, so when things seem irrational, e.g., a Trump supporter mailing out utterly counter-productive bombs just two weeks before a crucial election, people try to put it into a context that makes rational sense for them. Hence all the theories that this was a "false-flag" operation somehow masterminded by the left.

My theory.

If he was a “Trump nut”, intent on really doing harm to Trump’s enemies, he wouldn’t have sent “toy” bombs to them, they would have been real.

Someone must have told him that if he sent “fake” bombs, he’d get off with a light sentence, and be free to enjoy all the money he was paid to do this thing.

Seems is was a ploy to try and bury the most recent “Jobs, not Mobs” meme of the Republicans.

He must be really stupid to not know that most elected people have their mail screened by security before it even gets to the recipients location.

Like more dem plots, it seems to be overkill on the optics, and the media takes it from there.

I’m sure we’ll be told the truth about that at about the same time that we learn the truth about the Vegas massacre.

In other words, never.
