Cannabis becomes legal in Canada

Country becomes second and largest with legal national marketplace.

The Canadian government is ready to pardon those with a cannabis possession record of 30 grams or less as the country becomes the world’s second and largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace.

Canada legalizes marijuana: here's everything you need to know Read more A federal official said Canada would pardon people with convictions for possessing up to 30 grams of marijuana, the new legal threshold, with a formal announcement due later on Wednesday.

The use of medical marijuana has been legal in Canada since 2001 and Justin Trudeau’s government has spent two years working toward expanding that to include recreational marijuana. The goal is to better reflect society’s changing opinion about marijuana and bring black market operators into a regulated system.

Uruguay was the first country to legalise marijuana, in 2013.

Legalisation began at midnight with shops in Canada’s eastern-most provinces the first to sell the drug.

Yes, but if you’re subjected to it for an hour? Come on.

And as the tobacco ninnies state, it can’t be good for you, long term, putting that in anyone’s lungs. (I don’t care as much about that - I’m worried about SHORT-term effects; they can suffer with their emphysema years down the road if they wish.)

No, it’s not absurd. It DOES put a curb on behavior.

I never said it was perfect. But the argument that “just legalize it” is bogus as well as “people still do it”. Why legalize murder? Yet, the fact it’s been illegal for eons doesn’t make it go away - but it SHOULD be illegal, and with good punishment (like the old days, not the namby-pamby now), you bet “illegal” reduces how much it happens.

Based on what? I don’t know. It’s good logic and one can see the results in some places. And I seriously doubt you’ve been collecting massive amounts of “studies” and data yourself to come to any solid conclusion.

I am not a researcher, not for this, so sorry, no data. Only general observation.

Honestly? No. You'd get higher actually smoking a fake oregano joint.

Additionally, smoking flower is going the way of the dodo. More and more people are vaping oil these days, which might bring different health challenges down the road, granted, but at least not "smoking"-related ones.

Any country legalizing cannabis. It violates UN treaties.

That’s an incredible list. It’s quite frightening how first big pharm/ the medical cabal hooked people on pain killers, now says marijuana is a really good alternative to alleviate pain. How many generations before the result is a completely imbecilic, DNA altered, stunted herded population?

LOL UN is against pot? They don’t seem to help stem any issues with major drugs.

A very informative post. Up Canada way I can attest to the effects of pot on people. I was security at a large mall. A movie was shown at the cinema there called "The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Turn away crowds. It proved so popular that the management allowed a second showing at midnight.

I could smell that stuff easily, when that crowd showed up. Now to be fair they were not violent or combative like alcohol fueled patrons. Yet their manner was definitely different to the average patron. It was sort of insouciant and "in your face" attitude. A change was evident in them. I shudder to think of them driving like that. Many Canadians express concern re driving habits of these people. Then there is the aircraft passenger industry. Airlines say the personnel have to be 28 days clear of pot before flying...... what a crock!

But you arent “curbing” anything when it comes down to it.

Millions of people smoke weed, lots do it openly.

You just think it should be illegal for the same reason why anyone would make drinking illegal or smoking tobacco illegal, some weird need to regulate people’s private activities even if they arent doing any harm to anyone else.

People die more from cigarettes and excessive drinking than pot smoking, but a move to make those things illegal, like weed is federally, would be fought tooth-and-nail by the same people that swear it is imperative that this be kept illegal. If someone did move to do that, we would pitch a fit about big state nanny-ism. Is it because smoking and beer is associated with stuff like football and John Wayne?

So what is the absolutely rock-solid reasoning why this should? And I mean something more substantive than “I hate dem dar hippies”. I dont really care if you saw some pothead that refused to get his stuff together as a reasoning. I had an uncle die on the streets because he couldn’t keep himself off the booze, and an aunt that ultimately died of lung cancer from a lifetime of smoking. Guess what? I dont push to make those activities illegal, because I know they did it far outside of reasonable moderation.

First off, you didn’t see where I stated that it absolutely should be illegal.

I’m making some arguments.

There is absolutely one aspect that should be illegal - smoking it and spreading your smoke. I don’t need to get high off someone else. THAT impinges on MY right NOT to be high.

The rest - well, given I despise smoking and drinking and drugging up, in my little world they’d all be illegal. But in my LIBERTARIAN view, they would not.

It’s really up in the air. After all, much older and wiser people have been e.g., banning obscenity, “porn”, drugs and so on since the Founding (including “disarm yourselves at the courthouse” which 2A types pshaw at every new version). At least on a local scale. So are all those actions from the past wrong? Even when set up by the people who wrote and approved the Constitution themselves?

At best, then, it must be a local issue, and it’s the right of those locals to choose what their laws are? No Fed, maybe no State law, but locals? Are they allowed?

Were you okay? Did it trigger you or traumatize you in any way? Did you seek therapy?

No, it just made me think back to the Cheech and Chong movies of my youth.

But isn’t it only medical maryjane that is legal in Maryland? Not over-the-counter for any adult like in Colorado or Canada?

Wax, shatter, and other concentrates sold in legal shops in my state now have THC percentages in the range 60% to 90%.
