#RoyalWedding: Princess Eugenie chose Great Gatsby passage for second reading

In addition to serving as her sister’s maid of honor on her wedding day, Princess Beatrice will also give a special reading during Princess Eugenie‘s royal wedding to Jack Brooksbank on Friday

After Jack’s cousin, Charles Brooksbank, finishes his reading — taken from St. Paul’s Letter to the Colossians — Beatrice will stand before the gathered wedding guests at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle to read a passage from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced–or seemed to face–the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.

“Precisely at that point it vanished — and I was looking at an elegant young rough-neck, a year or two over thirty, whose elaborate formality of speech just missed being absurd. Some time before he introduced himself I’d got a strong impression that he was picking his words with care.”

The quotation actually mirrors the royal’s own sentiments about her future husband. Just as Gatsby has the ability to make people feel important, Eugenie says Jack embodies that same quality.

'Eternal reassurance' - The priest at the wedding of course, tied the passage back to Jesus Christ.

(Dress below by Peter Piloto and Chrisopher de Vos) It is apparently designed to purposely show her scars from the spinal surgery she had when she was young.

Jay Gatsby was a swindler and perhaps a sociopath. I hope this is not Princes Eugenie’s sixth sense giving her a clue about her new husband.

I don’t particularly care for the dress, but it’s a thousand percent more tasteful and young Barbara Bush’s.

I would say this reading belongs at a wedding reception not in the Mass.

You DON’T fool with the Mass.

The bride looks the best she’s ever looked, but the dress is boring, not very modern. No veil? She doesn’t look like a bride.

No Camilla? Supposedly in Scotland. She couldn’t reschedule? I think she’s avoiding Prince Andrew, who supposedly thinks she’s trash.

I agree with you. Surely Camilla could have rearranged for the wedding.Something’s up, there.

On the other hand, 97 year old Prince Philip loathes the bride’s mother with the heat of a thousand suns, and he turned up.

No, not flattering at all. She looks disheveled. You’d think people with all the money in the world could buy clothes that fit.

Beautiful dress. (Jack sounds a bit like a con artist)

I thought green was supposed to be the best color for gingers?

OKAY, so it’s an Anglican Mass

Anglican Priest can convert to Catholic faith and be ordained.

Anglicans follow the order of the Mass.

The ordination of married former protestant clergy began under Pope Pius XII.

He at least did not find the Anglican Mass totally alien.

There is if I am not mistaken, a Anglican Use Rite now called St. Peter’s.

“I thought green was supposed to be the best color for gingers?”

Maybe so - I’m no fashion maven, just an opinion as I’ve never seen a ginger look good in green. Could be another shade would work better for her.

She and her sister always look disheveled and frumpy. Fergie looked just fine. The Brits really need to get over their love of goofy hats.

Her gown was too plain but fit her much better than Meghan’s potato sack did.

The Gatsby reading? I - don’t - think - so. Jay was nothing to look up to or want in your life.
