Wyoming hunting guide fatally mauled by grizzly bears
Fox News ^ | 9/17/18 | Ryan Gaydos

A Wyoming hunting guide was fatally mauled and his client was injured when a pair of grizzly bears attacked them Friday, officials said.

{snip} Uptain and Chubon were attacked by bears as they field dressed the elk they had shot Thursday but were only able to find Friday, officials said. The bears “aggressively charged” the men and didn’t touch the dead elk, Teton County officials said.

{snip} Authorities later euthanized two grizzly bears, a mother and a cub, who wildlife managers believe killed guide Mark Uptain and wounded his client Corey Chubon near the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks border, according to USA Today.

Story originated with USA Today but it's been re-written and posted on Fox News, excerpted here.

In predator country wouldn't it be prudent to have someone with arms in hand standing security watch while the kill is being gutted?

What a terrible way to go. Death, most likely came very slowly.

Were these among the grizzlies that would have been hunted in the court-halted grizzly hunt?

Bears are evolutionary. Each generation seems to know to look for fresh meat after hearing gunshots. Guides should know this.

Isn't the guide supposed to have a proven grizzly-stopper pistol like the S&W 500 Mag, or .454 Casull handy in holster for just such an event?

Maybe he was out-drawn, bears are deceptively fast. Claws vs. trigger finger, maybe claws just won.

My condolences to the deceased's family.

Walked up on an Elk kill. A “grizz” reared up -—— OMG!
I very calmly back out as did my partner. Notice: “I back out.” We thought we were dead or in real trouble.
That “grizz” was 8’ tall!

Ever gut and quarter an elk? You got a knife in your hand the guy you’re with holding a leg. Then suddenly a bear and her cub are arguing with you about “who’s meat”. Drop a knife draw a pistol and fight it out. What a total laugh and bs. You’re probably out hunting the “turdy point buck”.

Just had a thread about an experienced guide who almost got killed by a 400 LB black bear. Every day is normal until suddenly it’s not.

I’m thinking ma and the cub found a blood trail and went looking for a wounded elk. They found it just after the guide and his client started work on it. The Yellowstone grizzleys hear a gun shot and they think it’s a dinner bell. Sorry these guys got drilled, but WY, ID, and MT are bear country. Travel at your own risk.

I had a nightmare once. I had been doing some target practice with a .22 pistol. I was being stalked by a grizzly. I’m sure the nightmare was caused by reading a story like this in American Rifleman or somewhere.

Bears can also smell a freshly gutted animal carcass from miles away. Most guides know that you have to quarter the animal and move out quickly after the kill.

First thought as I started to read this:

That guide was not qualified to be a "guide" in grizz country.

The gunshot was Thursday; they were gutti g it on Friday.

Bad summer for animal attacks. One dead mountain biker by cougar in Washington; one dead solo hiker in Oregon by cougar; one dead elk hunter by grizz in Wyoming. I’m probably forgetting a few.

I can’t imagine a worse way to go than by being lunch for somebody higher up the food chain.

They are not higher up the food chain. Humans are the pinnicle predator. Bears are omnivores and predators of opportunity. Territorial and agressive when defending what’s theirs, be it cubs or food. It’s pushing fall here in the Rockies. There’s an urgency to put on weight for the winter. Berries, fish, or deer or elk carcasses they don’t give a crap. Cougars are similar though generally not as agressive. I think the cats look at joggers and bikers like a house cat does a Laser pointer. These guys weren’t hunting bears or they would have killed them. The bears WERE hunting food. The hunters got caught in the way.

Shot late had to find it the next day. Happens here in rough country sometimes.

Why did the bears have to be euthanized?
