GOP in striking distance to retake Franken seat

Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith (D) holds a 7-point lead over Republican challenger and state Sen. Karin Housley ahead of November's midterms, according to a new poll publishing Monday.

The Star Tribune/MPR News Minnesota poll found that Smith, who replaced former Sen. Al Franken (D) following his resignation in January, has the support of 44 percent of likely voters. Another 37 percent support Housley, while 15 percent of those surveyed say they remain undecided, according to the poll.

Smith, the former Minnesota lieutenant governor, was tapped to replace Franken after he resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Smith now faces Housley in a special election to fill the remainder of Franken's term, which expires in January 2021. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates Smith's race as leaning Democrat. FiveThirtyEight gives Smith about a 90 percent chance to keep the seat.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) is also on the ballot, but she holds a far more significant lead over Republican challenger Jim Newberger, according to the poll. The poll found that 60 percent of likely voters support Klobuchar and 30 percent support Newberger. Cook rates Klobuchar's seat as "solid" Democrat.

The poll's results were based on interviews with 800 likely voters in Minnesota conducted from Sept. 10-12. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Unfortunately when Dems are in control of a state for as long as they’ve been in Minnesota they’ve had the opportunity to totally hotwire everything.

Look what the Swedes have done to Sweden...why shouldn’t they do it to the Land of 100,000 Somalis too?

“I am a lifelong MN resident. I have never...repeat...NEVER to my recollection seen a Star-Tribune Minnesota Poll that showed a Republican in the lead in any race for anything at any time.”

Agreed.

I’m gonna look over the cross-tabs on the Red Star’s polling later - but I have no doubt they oversampled Democrats.

It’s in their DNA. It’s what they do. inaccurate polling results.

This seat is doable for Karin Housley. This poll is about 4 weeks old. Current polls have it 5 points apart - but both candidates have poor name recognition. The undecideds are 25% of the polling.

Karin needs more donors for her campaign, as she must get her name publicized more. She is a very good candidate. Any freepers out there willing to take a chance on flipping this senate seat to the GOP in November? If so, go to Karin’s website and donate. Every little bit helps.

KARIN HOUSLEY FOR SENATE IN 2018!

Turn Minnesota red in 2018!

Landline based polls can’t access “risk takers.”

Trump is disproportionally backed by risk takers. Proof is his election.

Polls miss diehard Trump supporters with no landline.

Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith (D) holds a 7-point lead over Republican challenger and state Sen. Karin Housley ahead of November's midterms, according to a new poll publishing Monday.

By that token then Beto O'Rourke is within striking distance of taking Ted Cruz's seat and Mike Espy is within striking distance of taking the Mississippi seat. Anyone want to put money on whether either candidate will win?

That Senate seat has always been very very close no matter who is in it.
