This Constitution Day, states should finally unwrap the gift of Article V

Sept. 17 is Constitution Day, when Americans commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution. Hence, there is no better time to reexamine the true intentions of the founding fathers on the power of the national government.

Despite popular conceptions that the Constitutional Convention lacked conflict, the founding fathers often debated the balance of power between the national and state governments, among many other issues. As ratification hung in the balance, two factions emerged: Federalists, who supported the Constitution and a strong central government, and anti-Federalists, who supported strong state governments.

ADVERTISEMENT To placate the anti-Federalists and ensure ratification, the Federalists promised to pass a Bill of Rights to protect individual liberty and state sovereignty. Despite the anti-Federalist fears of a tyrannical central government, the Constitution does include another safeguard against this affront to liberty: Article V.

Although never implemented, Article V gives states significant power that can — and should — be used today. Since the federal government continues to usurp power and excessively spend taxpayers’ money, there is no time like the present for states to put this to an end.

Article V allows state legislators to propose amendments to the Constitution. For this to take place, two-thirds of the states must submit applications to Congress for a convention of states to be called. After a convention is called, states can pass amendments to the Constitution without congressional approval. These amendments then need to be ratified by three-fourths of the states.

“In before the usual FUD gang chimes in!”

Well, gosh, it looks like the childish “do it or I will call you names” already arrived.

While waiting for that to happen, why not assert Amendments 9 and 10.

I am surprised the usual “Gosh , if only we would follow the Constitution as written everything would be OK “ crowd has not posted yet. It's almost as if Article V magically appeared on that document decades after it was written and therefore should be ignored as something alien to it.

9 and 10 were killed by the Republican/Democrat war amendments. Power was centralized in order to end Slavery and discrimination. I’ve noticed that the worst decisions by leftist judges often use these amendments to justify their poison. Now that slavery is over and discrimination has been minimized it’s time to that power away from the Federal Government and give it back to the States. Precisely why Article V was added in the first place.

Careful use of any document is required.

Anyone petulantly jumping into an Article V convention thinking they’ll prevail with their demands has no idea what the Hell their doing.

If the liberals control that convention, they could just as easily introduce damaging amendments that might very well pass the 3/4 rule.

If you can’t get 3/4ths to pass an amendment now, what difference does an Article V convention make??

Specifically, what power do you think an Article V convention provides your ideas?

You don’t need an Article V convention. Simply introduce your Amendment(s) to the US Congress now. There is simply no difference.

If the liberals control that convention...

Right now they don't. That's why it's a good time to do it!

“Right now they don’t. “

How do you know that? We haven’t had the convention scheduled and the nominated delegates known.

There are also no rules about the convention. There is nothing to say the liberals wouldn’t demand equal party representation versus House or Senate ratios.

Got to drain the Swamp First.

The swamp has got it's protections in place. Just ask Roy Moore , Chris McDaniel or Joe Miller. Article V by passes the whole corrupt lot of them. Like it was meant to.

There is simply no difference...

There is a difference. Congress is not going to reform itself. That's why a means around them was devised in the first place. The ratification of 3/4's of the states is the only thing that is the same.

There is nothing to say the liberals wouldn’t demand equal party representation versus House or Senate ratios.

Republicans control the majority of the state houses. At present, Republicans control 67 of the 99, and control both chambers in 32 states. Democrats control 32 chambers, and both chambers in 14 states. Only four states have divided control of their legislatures. Republicans therefore CAN tell Democrats to pound sand given the current balance. Obama has given us this gift of control . Now is the time to use it!

You honestly think that we could hold an Article V convention in the current environment and not have it disrupted by Antifa, MS=13, Skin Heads, etc.? No, the puppet masters must be rounded up and controlled before any changes are made.

Trust the Plan. President Trump has one, and is executing it to WIN.

Of course the RATS and their assorted vermin will make lots of noise. All the more reason to take advantage of our current situation! Yank away all the squealing piglets from their tits while we have the advantage in seats to do it! Do YOU think we are going to have a better chance any time soon?

Yes. When President Trump says it is time to do this. Probably after he ends the Fed and returns us to State Money.
