More than 100 U.S. Marines launched an air assault in the southern Syrian desert backed by artillery fire to send a strong message to Russia not to send their forces inside a restricted area near an American military outpost, two U.S. defense officials have told Fox News.
The show of forces comes as the leaders of Iran, Russia and Turkey are meeting Friday in Tehran to hammer out their next steps in the seven-year Syrian civil war ahead of an expected offensive led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assads forces into the countrys northwest Idlib Province.
On two separate occasions this month (Sept. 1 and Sept. 6), the Russian military warned its American counterparts of its intention to conduct a military operation in southern Syria near the At Tanf garrison where U.S. special operations forces are located.
Twice the U.S. military has told the Russians to back off.

I wouldn’t mind so much if I knew that we were actually kicking ass and taking names and not pussyfooting around.
Oh GREAT..!
Another group of people to expen$ively straighten out after 2,000 years, who will then love us as much as SOMALIS do.
STUPID.
BUILT THE WALL
This is NONE of our busines$$.
Near as I can tell, most everybody there needs to be annihilated.
Supplying weapons to islamic radicals
Big supply just arrived Eastern Syria per local sources
Radical Islam including ISIS.
Let ISRAEL do it.
I’ll be the whole Trumpet section.
THEIR corner of the world, not ours.
Our next step should be to recognize KURDISTAN! Guts Syria, Turkey and part of Iraq (if need be) to provide US with a “new” ally v the new Russian-Turk-Syrian Alliance in the M.E.
McTrump needs to defend Obama’s Syrian legacy.
Is President Trump still being played by the forever war Deep State? I was hoping that the NYT reveal would’ve smartened him up to their agenda.
We were supposed to be getting out I thought.
This is a mistake in my opinion. The longer we hang around the better the chances of an escalating war that ends who knows when or where.
Indeed, Syria is a former collonial district and illegal fictitious nation. Alawites are used as canon fodder for Iran’s war on Israel with Assad as a puppet and Russia wants to manage the area as its own collonial outpost.
No way we let them do that
[as the leaders of Iran, Russia and Turkey are meeting Friday in Tehran]
Wow, how very spot-on to Ezekiel 38.
Except we on a high horse sanctioning Russia for re-annexing Crimea
as violating international order by redrawing borders
Makes it a bit difficult to justify redrawing maps and borders to create Kurdistan
Although that didnt stop us in Kosovo
We’ve effectively destroyed ISIS in Syria, time to declare victory and go home. Russia is right when they say the Syrian government has the right to establish control over all of their territory.
If Turkey supports the Sunni fundamentalists and Russia supports the Shia and Assad how can they be allies? What a cluster mess. When we recognize Kurdistan lets make sure they get some Iranian soil too.
Needed more is Trump ordering 100 Marines to do a live-fire air demonstration over Washington D.C. to send a strong message to the swamp.
It may come to that. I certainly hope not though.
What are we doing in Syria, exactly?
I hope only live fire exercises to spend some of our tax dollars stored up in missiles and give The United States Marine Corps some action.
Controlling the border region of Northern Iraq and Syria. Its strategic in many ways including the Oil. For the small number of troops it gives the Kurds and others time to breathe and with ISIS in Mosul recently wiped out some buffer in the region. Basra in extreme southern Iraq is on fire at the moment and this Syria/Iraq region could become another powder keg. No use in letting the Iranians kick it off.
