John McCain, the longtime senator and 2008 GOP presidential candidate who refused to leave fellow prisoners of war behind to escape years of torture in Vietnam, and whose maverick streak as Arizona’s senior statesman at times frustrated fellow Republicans and confounded President Donald Trump, has died, his family confirmed in a statement Saturday.

He was 81and had been diagnosed with brain cancer in July 2017.

McCain had decided to discontinue medical treatment for the glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, his family announced on Aug. 24. He had surpassed expectations for his survival, but "the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict," the statement said.

I’m watching an old and good movie on TCM. I will not switch to Fox News.

I’m no fan of McCain, but these posts are classless.

McCain was a classless traitor, it's good he's dead.

Earlier, I prayed that he repented of his sins and found the Lord before he passed.

Who do you think loves him more, you or the Lord?

Its over and that’s the way it is.

Anger and rage isn’t going to be the right response.

Senator McCain served in the military and then moved into a political career where I think the problems began, the trouble began.

Of course, he picked Sarah Palin for VP in 2008. I think he brought her to our attention and gave her some opportunities during the campaign and afterwards in the media since McCain has media connections through his chairing of the committee overseeing media regulation in the Senate.

Not to be a party pooper, but Romney will pick up where McCain left off.

He is now called a hero and giant of the senate by the left. Funny they didn’t think much of him when he ran for President. RIP

I’m sorry to hear of his passing. I believe there are things bigger than politics, and I wished that he would make a full recovery not only for his sake but for the sake of his family who loved him very much. That wasn’t meant to be, and I think we can all agree that cancer is a monster that I hope is slayed. It takes too many people and animals as well. May he RIP.

I’d add to those commenting remember how we would react if someone we really were big fans of here on FR died and the liberals left nasty comments. We must be bigger than that. If you have nothing nice to say, don’t write you have nothing nice to say, just say nothing.

I am a constituent of McCain. He was a terrible dishonest senator who didn’t give a damn about the voters he lied to repeatedly to get elected and re-elected. He was a most dishonorable man. He was too selfish to resign from his senate seat, he thought it was his own personal possession.

He’s finally dead and I do not/will not mourn his passing.

Of course they didn’t. If he was President & had followed through on his campaign promises, the tune would be different.

Agree! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Mr. McCain may not have lived by these words, but we can. The posts are classless. What a shame. The world is ugly enough as it is. It would be nice to come to a conservative place where there is thoughtful discussion, not degrading of the dead.

A time for reflection for us all.....

A Common Destiny for All

Ecclesiastes 9 New International Version

9 So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them. 2 All share a common destiny—the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad,[a] the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not.

As it is with the good,
so with the sinful;
as it is with those who take oaths,
so with those who are afraid to take them.

3 This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. 4 Anyone who is among the living has hope[b]—even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!

5
For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even their name is forgotten.
6
Their love, their hate
and their jealousy have long since vanished;
never again will they have a part
in anything that happens under the sun.

7 Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8 Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9 Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.

11 I have seen something else under the sun:

The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
or wealth to the brilliant
or favor to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.

12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:

As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times
that fall unexpectedly upon them
