Technically, if Trump does this, he isn't bypassing Sessions. Sessions is recused, already bypassed (and I think properly recused). The problem children here are Rosenstein and Wray, who put the institutions above bedrock principle. And since Wray reports to Rosenstein, the buck stops at Rosenstein just before it gets to Trump.

Trump knows this which is why this is a show.

Wray is not the problem since he reports to Rosenstein and must do as he says.

This misdirection and Trump's public anger against Sessions only leaves Sessions backed by Dems when these documents are dropped. Trump gets even with enemies which Dems and the deep state made themselves out to be....all this dirt is going to drop in time for the elections, right on schedule. Sessions will have been publicly defended by Dems on tv over and over with plenty of tape to rerun.

And we know now that there is no Trump campaign Russian collusion now after over a year of this witch hunt. Nothing Sessions needs to recuse himself from when the tides turn.

From my point of view, Sessions recusal is well taken. It's based on a good principle that conflict of interest is to be avoided. DOJ is a big house, and the absence of any single player should not break the function of the operation. IOW, Sessions is not indispensable or the only person who can prosecute Clinton, Comey, Mueller, Ohr, Strzok, and so on.

That this also (pretty much naturally) results in the DEMs standing up for principle is all the better - albeit pretty much unheard of, as the only principle the DEMs adhere to is the outcome.

Meanwhile, Sessions has clean hands, and the principle of avoiding conflict of interest is upheld.

Trump's anger at Sessions is real. There is no misdirection. The misdirection wouldn't help Sessions or more importantly it wouldn't help Trump a bit. In fact it would hurt Trump more, forcing Trump to be involved with the document release.

Democrats are never held to account for consistency in the media. They can love him now and turn on a dime to hate him later, and not have a care about how their controlled media will frame the issue. The argument that Sessions action (or inaction) is part of some sting setup is complete fantasy and ridiculous wishful thinking. This will be won or lost without Sessions ever playing a part - except by his absence - in any of the proceeding. He’s out in a pasture, aka Ferdinand, sniffing flowers while the war goes on around him.
