The roads through the mountains and valleys of Tajikistan and Central Asia are enticing to serious cyclists.

You can get some seriously high mountain roads on US 212 near Red Lodge, Montana. It is also a better place to show off that Spandex better and obstruct more traffic.

But seriously, this is good news in a macabe sort of way. Before Trump, ISIS got a lot more attention by destroying cities of significant size and killing thousands.

Now they are limited to doing isolated attacks on foreign tourists in Krapistan countries.

And I would voluntarily choose to become a tourist in Tajikatsan because, why???

Yes, I am sorry for the victims, but choosing, as a civilian, to be in an area where you know Islamist extremists are active is just plane dumb. And if you didn’t know the proximity and relationships, cultutally and ethnically between Afghanistan and Tajikistan then for that reason also you were too ignorant to be choosing to go there.

Adventure tourism was never an itch I needed to scratch, but I kinda, sorta understand the appeal. A couple of my cousins, when they were much younger, got out to some quite remarkable places. I choose my friends more carefully than I choose my cousins, and my friends have more sense (although some had some exotic deployments in the military or State Department).

If you think Trump talks tough about the 'stans, you should hear the State guys -- worker bees, not the politicos and aspiring ambassadors, who are suckup artists -- talk when they're off duty with no snitches around.

The world has gotten a lot more dangerous for Western travellers in the past 20 years. The predators have lost their fear of retribution.

I am presently touring a very dangerous foreign country — the U.S.A. ... just sayin, was driving along a highway in NV with my windows down, and a bird flew in, part of it bounced off my head and a cloud of feathers then floated around in the cab for a few minutes. Later on found the hapless creature between my seat and the door. Rather a surprise at 70 mph. Don’t think it was a direct hit on me or I might not be conscious or even alive.

Then we got to the campground and discovered it had been wiped out by a flash flood ten days previously.

And some of the dirty looks you get from locals when they see your no-doubt-commie licence plate, that leaves a deep scar. Well not really cuz I don’t care what my fellow paleo-cons think of me.

Thinking I might tour the Paddock family home later today, or maybe just sit out by the pool for five minutes and see if I’m still alive at the end of that.

Oh, and the country you really want to avoid is Stanistan. that place is the pits.

“Why do people want to go to s***hole countries?”

They get deployed there. I was sent to Uzbekistan with a maintenance detachment in 2004. No travel allowed but our chaplain pulled strings and we drove to Samarkand to bring stuff to a reopened Catholic church.

Samarkand lies close to the border with Tajikistan. As our guide gave us a quick tour of the city, we drove past a casual hire point where several hundred Tajiks were milling around. The guide turned up his nose & remarked, “they come across the border looking for work. That place is poor and it really sucks.” Yes, his English was that good.

FWIW the Uzbeks seemed OK, not much Islam evident. They are mostly secular and like their vodka. Their women dress as they please. Many go to college here. Too bad our worthless State Department got us kicked out; it could have been a friendship worth having in the region.

When you travel to uncivilized sh*thole "countries", you take your chances. Why would anyone want to voluntarily go to any of the "stans"?

A part of the world to be avoided. Remember the US rock climbers in Kyrgyzstan who were taken hostage by jihadis and managed to kill one and escape?

one of the poorest former Soviet republics and has struggled with poverty and instability since its independence in 1991.

The bikers were wealthy and loved all peoples and have struggled with instability since at least day one.

Is that photo real? It looks like an impact crater with raw sewage.

Who the hell thinks that’s beautiful?

“They get deployed there.”
Exactly. Angola 2009-2012 comes to mind. There is something seriously wrong with an oil exporting country where the government employees try to shake you down for cash (euros or dollars, not kwanza) when you are at the airport trying to leave.

I wonder if I should cancel my 3 month walking-tour and goodwill-tour of tajikistan??? It seemed like such a great idea.
