We’re rivals, not enemies - big difference.

The definitions may have tweaked a bit due to the creation of nuclear weapons. A war that ends up in nukes being hurled and the end of life on this planet is unthinkable. Won't happen. None of the parties are suicidal.

Therefore "enemy" must be defined a bit more loosely than previously.

Radical Islam on the other hand IS suicidal.

The definition of rival vs enemy has also been more than tweaked by the advent of free trade (more in the theory than the practice, granted). It seems obvious to me that Mr Trump is working toward making Russia a trade partner to obviate the idea of them as enemy.
