They live in an area where the caves are a HUGE tourist attraction——the coach did nothing wrong——just had some VERY bad luck.

I was trying to make a joke about political correctness, which must have fallen flat. Never mind.
Same kind of thing happens every year with Boy Scouts going on Camping Trips, I remember a few years ago there was a flash flood that killed several of them.
Things happen. And exploring nature is better than sitting at home playing video games all the time.

It's not strange to me. They are probably in awful condition and may be psychologically affected. I cannot imagine spending that much time in a pitch dark cave, much of that time alone and not knowing if rescue would ever come, and then having to go through that extraction process at the end. They've got to be traumatized to some extent - I know I would be.

Quite a few of Elon’s twitter followers urged him to get involved. He agreed to look into it and that’s what he came up with. Honestly, I can’t fault him for his efforts, even if it’s partly self promotional. I think he’s genuine though. He’s got a history of responding to charitable requests with resources or money.
