Tightening Chest and Tingling Fingers: Why Are the Military’s Fighter Pilots Getting Sick?
FPNews ^ | July 3, 2018 | Lara Seligman

The Navy is investigating the latest in an alarming string of incidents that left pilots disoriented and shaken.

On June 28, a young U.S. Navy officer flying in a two-seater electronic warfare jet in the skies over Washington State suddenly felt a tightness in his chest and tingling in his extremities. He instantly recognized his symptoms as signs of hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation.

The jet, an EA-18G Growler from a training squadron out of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, diverted to a local airport, and made an “uneventful” landing, according to Navy spokesman Cmdr. Scot Cregan. The crew member, an electronic warfare officer in training, was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

If these are strobes, they are becoming more sophisticated question is how far behind is the Pentagon in fixing this...or could be sabotage to the plane its self...i.e., toxic fumes. What ever the Cyber War has been declared...China? Russia? Turkey? George Soros? Any number of power mad people could be at the forefront.

[[hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation.]]

I thought only liberals suffered from this?

“hypoxia, or oxygen deprivation.”
Case of the “Vapors”?

Weird.

Do today’s complex aircraft monitor and regulate O2, pressure and mix breathing air based on the pilot’s physiological conditions? Is the computer monitoring the pilot’s heart rate, Pulse-ox and blood pressure (along with G-suit)?

Software problem that can’t properly read ALL pilots physiological reactions to stress?

Another reason to put pilots in remote cockpits with real time virtual reality to fly the planes remotely. No?

I think this has been a known issue on Navy aircraft for a while, issues with the O2 systems.

That was my first thought too. Here's an interesting update on that issue.

No?

NO! You don't need a computer to monitor all that crap. You need a system that reliably provides properly oxygenated air to the pilot. Problems seem to be associated with a transition from a LOX based system to an oxygen concentrator based system.

All aircraft involved have been designed or were modified to use an onboard oxygen breathing system that uses bleed air from the engines.

Prior systems used liquid oxygen (LOX) which required cryogenic handling and added extra weight but didn't have the troubles the newer systems exhibit.

This sounds like an easily solvable problem (relative to general aviation dangers).

We know about envelopes of environmental conditions in the cockpit. With a dubious thanks to the nazi’s we know about envelopes of many human conditions.

Monitor the first and extrapolate the latter. Any new methods for creating lox? Any formula changes, storage changes suppliers? Is the delivery system robust enough? Have these fighters become too high performance or too responsive? Is it self inflicted? And yes, after 8 years of Obama I would say sabotage is a registrable risk.

I'd prefer a pressure tank of O2 to relying on an oxygen concentrator any day! Ever try to clear up a hangover with an oxygen concentrator?

Oxygen is provided via On-Board Oxygen Generation Systems (OBOGS) and is regulated through an O2 Regulator. On June 28, a young U.S. Navy officer, no comment on the Pilot in Commands condition. One pilot getting sick does not make for a crisis. He could be ill and shouldn’t have been in the Aircraft. My suggestion is they need to go back to Liquid Oxygen(LOX)system, that supplies gaseous oxygen for breathing 0n high-altitude aircraft flights.

Could it have anything to do with the AF goal of getting fighter aircraft pilots out of the cockpit?
