Experts Bet on First Deepfakes Political Scandal
IEEE Spectrum ^ | 22JUN2018 | Jeremy Hsu

Posted on 06/26/2018 2:43:08 AM PDT by AdmSmith

A quiet wager has taken hold among researchers who study artificial intelligence techniques and the societal impacts of such technologies. They’re betting whether or not someone will create a so-called Deepfake video about a political candidate that receives more than 2 million views before getting debunked by the end of 2018.

The Deepfake technology in question first gained notoriety in December 2017 when a person going by the pseudonym “DeepFakes” showed how deep learning—a popular AI technique based on neural network computer architecture—could digitally stitch the faces of celebrities onto the faces of porn actors in pornography videos. Since that time, social network services such as Twitter and Reddit have attempted to clamp down on a slew of amateur-created Deepfake videos that are typically being used for pornographic purposes.

Experts have been investigating and refining the deep learning techniques behind such Deepfake videos. Beyond just face swapping, researchers have shown how to digitally mimic both the appearance and voice of individuals in order to create the equivalent of digital puppets.

“Would you be that surprised if the week before the midterm elections, a Deepfake video came out that was some kind of Russian agitation designed to inflame Americans regardless of which side they were on?” Horowitz says. “In some ways, at this point I would be surprised if the Russians didn’t try—the question is how much pickup it gets.”

New technologies for old problems:

It doesn’t even have to be technically good. Even a crudely doctored image falsely showing McCain meeting al-Baghdadi has been getting traction in the internet and in Freerepublic among the other places.

I expect to see the day when everyone will be able to create their own digital world that will be nearly indistinguishable from the physical. Virtual reality still needs some work, but mostly it’s about computing power. It’s just a matter of time.

If you thought internet addict was bad now, just wait.

One of those Deep Fake video editors was posted on Reddit, became wildly popular because of its ease of use, then got “banned” from Reddit. I downloaded a copy of it, tried it, thought it was quite good and somehow lost the download. Wish I could remember what the name of it was. It was as easy to use as Windows Movie Maker, which was quite shocking for everything it did.

Trying to come up with a retroactive excuse in advance for the contents of the Weiner laptop.

Well, I’m betting that it the first Deepfake video will be used against a conservative Republican candidate.

“crudely doctored image falsely showing McCain meeting al-Baghdadi has been getting traction”

How do you know it was doctored? It sounds like something that treasonous bastard would do.

The sex videos of Hillary have someone worried and looking for a cover story

Yup. Yup.

Think tarmac....think laptop...think Pear-body Hillary.

And you'll know why this article was written.

The original image is also in the internet and was there before. You can see how someone just took it and pasted in al-Baghdadi head.

The next step in evolution —

Humans get addicted to virtual reality, and incapable of dealing with real reality, either die off or are eliminated by the machines.

I haven’t tried any of these devices, but I hear they’re not that good and I know 3D movies give me a headache.

Every FReeper should read “The Commissar Vanishes”. And that canal cost 30,000 lives to dig, if memory serves.

Bingo. I'm always suspicious of the timing of stories like this. Perhaps Clinton's infamous cake-throwing election-night meltdown was caught on a cellphone.

Nobody will believe photographic or video evidence on the internet or on TV or from the govt. Not that we have a lot of trust in it now. It will lose it’s value as more people wise up. So there’s only print, face to face meetings. It’s like a few steps backwards for communications. This is good for newspapers. Bad for the younger generation who is so hooked at the navel with electronic media. They won’t know what reality is.

The devices are unfamiliar to me as well.

3D movies give me a headache

Clyde Lewis of "Ground Zero" radio (a bargain basement Art Bell) said the flashing lights in the recent "Incredibles 2" triggered migraine headaches in him.
