As an H.I.V. Prevention Drug Surged in Australia, Condom Use Fell
New York Times ^ | June 11, 2018 | Emily Baumgaertner

The rollout of a drug that prevents H.I.V. infection was followed by a reduction in condom use among gay and bisexual men in Australia, according to a study published in the journal Lancet H.I.V.

But so effective was the drug that H.I.V. infection rates in the study region declined anyway, the researchers concluded.

During the rapid distribution of a drug that prevents infection — a strategy called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP — among gay and bisexual men in Australia, researchers found that unprotected sex increased even among those not on PrEP, suggesting that perceptions of risk had declined in communities where the drug was widely available.

“Safe sex is basically transformed by PrEP,” said Martin Holt, a researcher at University of New South Wales in Sydney, who led the study.

“It’s great that these guys are feeling optimistic about avoiding H.I.V., but it has disrupted prevention methods at a community level.”

...

From 2013 to 2017, the proportion of H.I.V.-negative men using PrEP increased to 24 percent from 2 percent. During that time, the proportion of respondents with casual partners who said they consistently used condoms dropped to 31 percent from 46 percent.

Strikingly, unprotected sex among men who did not take PrEP increased 9 percent.

...

One concern is that PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections. As use of the pill spreads, some clinicians are detecting more cases of diseases such as gonorrhea, as well as drug resistance to them, according to Dr. Paul Volberding, the director of the AIDS Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco.

Yeah, a perfectly normal lifestyle. /s How much tax money should be spent on AIDS research and treatment when homosexuals negate the benefits by acting more recklessly?

What about the infection rates for all the other types of butt-borne/casual sex diseases since the hiv prevention drug?

Good question.

While there are more treatments for AIDS and HIV than years ago, there are many other nasty infections/diseases spread by male homosexual behavior.

In other words, not to get graphic, but boys, don’t abandon the condoms because of breakthroughs in fighting AIDS. There are many other threats to your health out there.

How much money would have been saved and put to useful endeavors if it had not been squandered on keeping sexual perverts riddled with pervert diseases, alive a little longer to keep doing pervrted things and attempt to confuse more kids into the lifestyles?

They seem to be celebrating the end of the use of condoms. They clearly never stopped having sex.

They had ads in downtown Oakland for PrEP with cartoons of bare human backsides.

.... Well if you bothered to read the fine print of this article you would know that this treatment ONLY covers and works on the HIV strain that is contracted by sex through human Nasal Passages.

Very last sentence. They're increasing, but no specific numbers..

Better yet, quit the buggery. It's never good for you, not in this world and certainly not in the next.

A certain type of person enjoys risk. Having lived a real life, including time in the (operational, not rear echelon) military, I have no interest in unnecessary risk.

Is this like a study proving that men prefer sex without a condom to sex with a condom? I think we could have stipulated to that.
