Oh, they were believers, just as you indicated in regards to their monotheism and avoidance of idolatry. They actually knew more than nearly all of the self-described believers of today. They did much more linear, un-distracted reading of the Bible and world history than most of the more educated people now. That's why some of them held beliefs not often understood today.
