Billboard Music Awards Hit Record Low Ratings In Key Demo

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards hit a new low Sunday night in the coveted demographic of ages 18-49, dropping 10 percent from last year’s low in overnight numbers.

According to Variety, the three-hour music award show broadcast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas scored an average of 2.1/8 share in the key demographic with 7 million viewers. In comparison, the 2017 awards show, which aired on ABC, averaged a 2.3 in the 18-49 age group with 7.7 million people tuned in.

Sunday night’s show not only lost in the demo, but as it stands right now, fell 9 percent in viewership. The current record for low viewership is held by Fox’s 2006 Billboard Music Awards show, with 6.1 million viewers.

Leading off the show Sunday night, Kelly Clarkson addressed the deadly school shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas Friday that left 10 people dead and said she was tired of “moments of silence,” instead calling for a “moment of action.”

“So why don’t we not do a moment of silence? Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change?” Clarkson explained. “Why don’t we change what’s happening? Because it’s horrible.”

So far in 2018, the majority of award shows have struggled in the ratings battle with the Oscars, Grammys and Golden Globes hitting near or record-lows.

Awesome. A new record low. Guess more and more folks don't give two craps about these pat themselves on the back shows. ;-)

More proof that people are sick and tired of having the toy department politicized.

Movies, concerts, football games....people are NOT tuning in for a political lecture.

...coveted demographic of ages 18-49...

Known by advertisers as the "more money than brains" demo.

I never knew Billboard had a broadcast show.
So there.

(What station was it on?)

More Trump-bashing.

I thought the country is hungry for the Blue Wave?

Apparently not.

I know the management group behind the BBMA lol. There are conservatives there and they are actually happy it bombed. If anyone actually knows how bad it was? They were GIVING away the tickets, MORE than the allowed budget. They were just there to get money from the sponsors and the network. They did their job as pros, just dont ask them about the ratings.

Pretty impressive - there were 7 million people who knew it was happening. That was probably the number of people who were up for awards plus their Moms.

I remember watching music awards show back in 1979. It was a different era. The music artists were respectful and seemed honored to receive their awards. I think Steve Martin might have been the host. Steve Martin was coming off his "King Tut" fame so he was probably a good choice to host the show.

I remember some of the acts. You had Supertramp for "Breakfast In America." Fleetwood Mac for "Tusk". John Stewart for "Bombs Away Dream Babies." The Knack got an award for Best New Artist. Donna Summer, Bee Gees, The Cars, Anita Ward, Sister Sledge, Eagles, and Blondie were other acts that got awards.

Those were halcyon days for the music business. You could turn on Top 40 radio and hear a lot of good pop songs.

I saw that Kelly Clarkson had her moment. I told my husband that it was probably not too smart to mouth off the night before her final contestant on the Voice is up to win. Just saying that her comments may have a negative effect on the voting. As I told hubby, she may have dixie chicked her chances.

Totally agree, 50’s, especially the 60’s, very much the 70’s was quite the time for musicians and there wee so many good bands back then, literally hundreds.

Well put.

As a teen in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I identify with so much of that music.

Musically, it was a great time.

A few weeks ago, a local radio station was doing a Kasey Kasem American Top 40 show from May of 1982.

It was great. Totally memory lane. Yep, some of it was a bit dated (for example, Pac-Man Fever) but most of it was great.

I think the Grammys started to go downhill when the Starland Vocal Band beat out Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for best new artist in the mid-seventies. :(

“Jennifer Lopez performed onstage”

I would've watched if she performed, "Taco-Flavored Kisses."

My jump the shark moment for the Grammys was when Milli Vanilli won for best New Artist. Then it turned out they neither sang or performed on any of those records!

Actually, I hear my son playing some pretty good music.

It's just hard for the music to break through the attention whores pushing their personal and political agendas. He never even asked us to watch the show.

Not a very good marketing strategy.
