Two West Virginia Internal Campaign Polls Show Blankenship Narrowly Edging GOP Rivals
Weekly Standard ^ | 05/07/2018 | John McCormack

Republicans are panicking as internal polls show Don Blankenship, a coal baron who spent time in jail for a mining disaster that killed 29 workers, surging into the lead in the West Virginia Senate GOP primary over Attorney General Patrick Morrissey and Congressman Evan Jenkins.

The results of an internal campaign poll conducted for one rival Senate campaign on Saturday and Sunday were: Blankenship 31 percent, Jenkins 28 percent, Morrissey 27 percent.

The results of another internal poll conducted Friday and Saturday were: Blankenship 28 percent, Morrissey 27 percent, Jenkins 14 percent. Two weeks earlier, the same rival campaign found Blankenship at 14 percent, Morrissey at 29 percent, and Jenkins at 26 percent.

Politico reported Saturday night that internal polling showed Blankenship surging, but the specific numbers are being reported for the first time by THE WEEKLY STANDARD.

President Donald Trump, who overwhelmingly carried the state in 2016, weighed in on Twitter Monday morning: “To the great people of West Virginia we have, together, a really great chance to keep making a big difference. Problem is, Don Blankenship, currently running for Senate, can’t win the General Election in your State...No way! Remember Alabama. Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey!”

"If it's truly a two-point race, that Trump tweet is going to make a difference," one West Virginia Senate campaign official tells THE WEEKLY STANDARD. What explains the Blankenship surge? “The debate [Monday on Fox News] helped him because Morrissey and Jenkins did what’s kind of playing out on TV--they’re slicing each other up,” says the campaign official. “Don got to be a one-liner folksy guy.” Second, Blankenship has taken up all the news coverage in the race by labeling Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell as “cocaine Mitch” and launching racist attacks against McConnell for creating jobs for “China people.”

I heard on AM radio today this guy’s radio spot for his campaign. He has to be a Democrat plant. “China People” Cocaine Mitch (McConnel). No idea if the polls are correct but if this guy is leading one of the other Republicans needs to take one for the team and drop out and throw his support to the someone other than this goon. This Blankenship guy is beyond a moron. Alabama all over again. I’ll take GOP light over a RAT all day long.

“If Blankenship is “like Trump,” how is it than that Trump did not endorse him?”

Because he thinks he can’t win.

I deem any disapproval coming from THE TRUMP - all by “unnamed sources”, y’know - to be the FAKE NEWS.

So a tweet posted publicly by President Trump himself is an "unnamed source" for the quote in your book?

Trollin', trollin', trollin'...

He needs to do more than tweet...he needs to call in to every national talk radio show tomorrow (and local in WV) and urge people not to vote for Blankenship.

Unfortunately ego is also at play for both Morrisey and Jenkins to stay in the race and split the vote...66% could vote against Blankenship and he could still win.

President Trump was elected to govern differently from the Mitt Romney’s and Luther Strange’s he endorsed in Senate races.

We need more Trump’s, more outsiders, more people to shake things up on so many fronts from our borders to protecting human life etc. etc.

The Romney’s and Strange’s won’t do that.

I’m going to go vote for Morissey in a few minutes. Of all three, he’s won a statewide race. That will matter in the fall. Slimey Joe Manchin has deep connections all over the state, and will not be an easy win.

I don’t trust Jenkins, and Blankenship has too much baggage to win in the general election.

So a state with lots of coal miners is voting for a rich guy who was blamed for a coal mining disaster? He came from behind, so he must be doing something right. I’d trust the WV voters’ judgment regardless.

None of these three can beat the fraud Manchin. He’s been in WV politics for years, talks like a republican to get elected. Claims he’s pro life but votes to fund PP. Claims he’s against Obamacare but once elected votes for it. Claims he’s a 2nd Amendment defender but once in office sponsors legislation to limit gun rights, He’s been lying for years to win races. He is not a conservative. He is just another lying democrat but the WV voters don’t care because they like him. He’s a younger version of Robert Byrd, the fraud he replaced, and like Byrd he’ll probably die in office.

Roy Moore “happened” by election fraud.

Roy Moore happened because it was a close election. It was a close election because of Roy Moore - not a result of the smear campaign against him. He was a doofus that was lucky to achieve what he achieved in life. But, just like Blankenship, he gets this idea that he is something he is not. You have to have the message and the appeal to overcome whatever big money Soros throws at you.

I read this before I go out to vote. I’ve been conflicted between Jenkins and Morrisey. I know that Morrisey is a good man and a wonderful AG and I want to vote for him, but I’ve been watching the public persona of both he and Jenkins. I’ve known Evans J for some years and I know he is the typical politician. He’s been running for something most of his adult life. He’s more of a politician and would stand a good chance against Joe M. I don’t know if Morrisey can beat Joe because he is not as well known. I see a Dem. trick in Blankenship. It could have been predicted. The GOP desperately needs some smarter people to lead the party in WV. We never should have ended up with three people running. It’s the perfect setup for the Dems to win. But I’m going now to vote. That’s all I can do. I have to vote for the right man who has a record of honesty and ability.
