Senate confirms Pompeo to be new secretary of State

The Senate narrowly confirmed CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be Secretary of State on Thursday, overcoming steep opposition to his nomination.

Senators voted 57-42, just over the simple majority needed for approval by the chamber.

Pompeo’s was a virtual lock after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) reversed his position and said he would support Trump’s pick.

The announcement came amid an intense pressure campaign by the White House, and spared Pompeo the dubious distinction of being the first secretary of State nominee since at least 1925 to fail to win over the Foreign Relations Committee.

“After calling continuously for weeks for Director Pompeo to support President Trump’s belief that the Iraq war was a mistake, and that it is time to leave Afghanistan, today I received confirmation that Director Pompeo agrees with President Trump,” Rand said explaining his decision.

But Pompeo’s nomination faced historic opposition from Democrats, sparking an unusually partisan confirmation fight for a secretary of State nomination.

Democratic Sens. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin (W.Va.) and Joe Donnelly (Ind.) — who are each up running in states won handily by Trump — joined with Sen. Doug Jones (R-Ala.) and Independent Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) to say they will support his nomination.

"In his role at the CIA, Mr. Pompeo has demonstrated the ability to be an effective manager and operator on the world stage," Jones said in a statement explaining his decision to back Pompeo.

“Since when is more than 57% just over a simple majority? “

Consider the source, it’s “The Hill!” Actually, that’s a misnomer, because it’s really “A Pile of Liberal Crap.”

"The Senate narrowly confirmed..."

Narrowly? There's 15 votes difference. If Pompeo was a Demoncrat, the press would claim he'd been overwhelmingly approved. What douche bags.

I get it now. Jackson was bait to draw the press away from Pompeo.

“Simple majority” means you need 51 votes. They got 57 votes. 6 votes is very narrow. Its not a 15 vote difference as you claim.

I wonder which Democrats will be drawn and quartered over their vote to confirm.

If they wanted to make a negative comment, they should have said that there were only 3 votes against Kerry and only 2 against Hillary, and the Pompeo didn’t “breeze through” the confirmation as they did. Maybe they should require a logic course for a journalism segree.

The Dems have OBVIOUSLY focus-group tested their obstruction, obstruction, obstruction, policies and found it doesn’t do too well...when elections are on the way.
