Yes. Very much. They’ll either be Pan Arabists who want to be hegemone over the entire Middle East, or Islamic fundamentalists who want to be hegemone over the entire Middle East. Or it could be the Saudis, who want to be hegemones over the entire Middle East. Getting a big chunk of Syria under their control will be the first step, or so they’ll each hope. Stabilize? Stabilize? Good luck with that.

Interesting. No talk here about any discrete organizing and arming any sort of a (Christian or secular Kurd) air mobile self defense militia. We’ll let the Russians do it.

If the Gulf Arabs or Egyptians were interested in getting their armies shot up in Syria, they would be doing so already.

Effective empires have always used auxiliaries to leverage control of territory.

The question is Do we really want to be an empire in that part of the world?

Minor correction:

Yes. Very much. They’ll either be Pan Arabists who want to be hegemone over the entire Middle East and beyond, or Islamic fundamentalists who want to be hegemone over the entire Middle East and beyond. Or it could be the Saudis, who want to be hegemones over the entire Middle East and beyond. Getting a big chunk of Syria under their control will be the first step, or so they’ll each hope. Stabilize? Stabilize? Good luck with that.

There, fixed it.
