Break-up of California moves a step closer as billionaire gets enough signatures to trigger vote

The chance of California splitting into three has moved a step closer after a billionaire secured enough signatures to trigger a referendum on the issue.

Tim Draper, who made his money through Hotmail and Skype, has gathered 600,000 signatures supporting the change – way above the 364,000 needed.

Those who want to break up California believe it would boost educational standards and reduce the political power of Sacramento, the state’s capital.

Providing the state authorities agree the signatures are genuine a referendum on the issue will be held this November alongside other mid-term elections.

Nothing political happens in CA without the RAT ruling party approving.
If it were ever approved, the RATs will have already done the numbers and figured out they can pickup two new Senate Seats.

So that’d be just east of the San Andreas Fault?

I wonder if LA would still get water from Northern California and from the Central Valley in such a split?

Inquiring minds want to know.

And just like other referendums, if they don’t like the results, they’ll find a court to throw it out.

I'd like to see NY split.

Separate NYS into New Amsterdam, New York, & Nassau-Rockland-Suffolk-Westchester Regions

That’s a pretty precise map. Jefferson gets the Bigfoots, and La Raza is exiled to the deserts .:)

Yes it does. Too bad the linear thinkers around here don’t see that.

So a red California would surely grow as California and Pacific Conservatives would seem a refuge.

What a futile nothing burger. I assure you— there will be no secession or break up into three states . no way in hell.

Exactly.

The kalifornia legislature and the US congress will never agree, no matter what the vote is. The will of the people be damned!

Heck, while we’re at it, split up Illinois and Wisconsin too. Take everything from just south of Chicago up to just north of Milwaukee and form a state out of that liberal sinkhole, and you’ll have two more conservative states to the north and south.

If Illinois (or California) went bankrupt, could that happen?

I had thought making 3 states out of California could be a good idea. I would anticipate 4 Democrat Senators and 2 Republican - basically what you have now.

Possibly part of the deal could be a reduction in the size of the 9th Circuit.

“They have the entire Pacific Ocean at their doorstep!

Why do they not have desalinization plants all up and down the coast?”

There was a time when that would have been possible, back when nuclear power was a growth industry here. Unfortunately, with the “current thinking” that nuclear power is a time bomb, desalinization, with it’s high energy requirements, is also gone. And some are even going so far as to suggest that we take down the dams in the Sierras so that the moron tree huggers can once again see scenes like the Hetch Hetchy Valley (the one north of Yosemite) where all the water for San Francisco is impounded. The sad truth of the matter is that we have not built a major water storage facility since 1979 when the population was half what it is today. If we managed the water resources we get from the rain and snow in the Sierras effectively, we wouldn’t even need desal plants.
