Putin Cements Powerful New Alliance With Iran and Turkey at Syria Summit
Daily Mail ^ | April 5, 2018 | Chris Pleasance

Iran's President Rouhani, Turkey's President Erdogan, and Russia's President Putin shake hands as they meet in Ankara on Wednesday and pledge to create a 'lasting ceasefire' in Syria.

Russia and Iran are strategic partners, with Russia providing military and financial support in return for influence over the Middle East.

Putin supplies both countries with sophisticated military equipment. President Erdogan recently signed a $2.5 billion arms deal with Russia for S-400 sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles, which has caused consternation among Turkey's fellow Nato members.

And Russia helps both countries on energy. It is also building Turkey a $20 billion nuclear power station, which began construction yesterday, and last year Putin signed a $30 billion energy co-operation deal with Iran.

These deepening ties are of concern to Europe because Turkey acts as an important buffer zone for migrants, filters out jihadis attempting to cross the border. Turkey controls much of the flow of middle eastern refugees into Europe. It stemmed the influx after signing a deal with the EU in March 2016 - but if it reversed this agreement the political consequences in Europe would be enormous.

Turkey also backs rebel groups in the country's north (hash-marked red area) which are pitted against Assad. Meanwhile US influence largely relies on Kurdish groups,, though its support has been waning amid protests from Ankara.

Iran has been accused of supplying arms to the Taliban by the government of Afghanistan and is fueling the conflict in Yemen.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, is an implacably opposed the Syrian regime and his administration provides significant backing for the rebels fighting it.

Trump is also a staunch ally of Israel, most notably announcing the US is to move its embassy to Jerusalem - putting it in direct opposition to Iran, which has threatened to destroy the state.

Under Trump, the US has become a close ally of Saudi Arabia, whose Crown Prince Salman said this week that he recognised Israel's 'right' to its land - becoming the first Arab leader to ever make such an acknowledgement.

He compared Iran's Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Hitler.

If Washington worked with Russia the mideast would be stable within 6 months.

That’s why Saudi Arabia is crawling back to US — they are being threatened with isolation and extermination.

These meetings between the three... and agreements.... have been going on for along while so this is not actually new news.......it’s no secret the three have been working in resolving the Syrian crisis for any who have been watching the developments and who the moving parties are.

Further there is little we know of ‘how’ Trump has been involved in this and that is on purpose. There are many behind the scenes, and the news, happenings which brought about these meetings in the first place to resolve the Syrian situation......What we do know is Trump wants the interested parties to fix it who are directly involved.

Saudi didn’t “crawl back to the US”......we went to them because Obama had clearly put us in Iran’s court. We have for decades and decades favored Saudi’s over Iran.......Trump restored this relationship which needs to be as it is...and remarkably so!

Implicit in almost all your comments regarding this region is a blatant disregard for Israel.

I believe he is.....which is why Syria’s being addressed by these three meeting. Obama/Hillary and the left got us into that mess to begin with by efforts to once again replace an elected and sitting President...just as they did in Libia, Egypt and ‘any Leader who would not agree to their World Order agenda’.

I often wondered just how long it would be before Erdogan officially jumped in bed with Russia and Iran as a threesome. It was never matter of ‘if’ but when. He’s been leaning that way for years.

And there’s a reason that Turkey is still a member of NATO. I’m wondering if they have access to certain technologies, as members, that they’re willing sharing with their new friends.

Time to close down Incirlik Air Base, move it to Kurdistan and give Erdogan and the rest, the finger.

Nuclear power plants in Turkey - what could go wrong?

Their shipyards in Istanbul still use low-level workers to load test new boat davits. Advanced countries use cement blocks or sand bags.

The best structures in Turkey were built by Roman engineers thousands of years ago.

Putin’s locking in his military gains with the Asad regime, while ‘limiting’ both Iran and Turkey’s ability to shape outcomes in Syria without Russia’s approval. Becuase Syria is an international not just regional, bargaining chip...Putin ultimately views Syria as a means to a broader geopolitical end.

So the only reason Putin brought Turkey into the diplomatic process is limit both Iran and Asad’s freedom of action, as well as ensure that Moscow has the final word in any political settlement to the conflict.
