Make no mistake, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook are in trouble not just here in America, but all over the world. The Tech Tyrant has only himself to blame. Had he just left us alone, he would not be so alone or widely viewed as a monopoly with all the inherent risks in that. He would also not be a national pariah. When you are in charge of something, be it a Girl Scout troop or one of the most powerful tech companies in the world, the only way to stay out of trouble is with simple and clear rules applied equally. By not doing this, Zuckerberg has wrapped himself round his own axle.
Even a billion or so Facebook users are unhappy with him. They feel trapped on a platform that offends them. Much of this resentment comes from feeling swindled. After herding us all into his monopolistic public square, Zuckerberg changed the rules.
On both the micro and macro levels, as Facebook arbitrarily singles out conservatives for suppression, censorship, and purges (not to mention left-wing fact checks), all while leftists doing the same remain mostly unmolested. There is no question that this is a digital public square lousy with double standards that we all witness on an almost daily basis
Facebooks entire problem is right there on its page of Kafka-esque community standards. What I mean by Kafka-esque is the opaqueness of rules that can be interpreted in so many different ways which means there really are no rules, which means 1) you dont know what the boundaries are, so 2) you are intimidated into not expressing yourself fully, and 3) you can be suspended or purged by Facebook without ever knowing why.

Hi, navymom,
In the news right now the media is proclaiming that the Trump campaign, “mined” data from facebook users using a company named Cambridge Analytica, to market to them.
The media is aghast that there was, “misuse” of that most holy of holies, facebook, to “invade” the privacy of the innocents. They are selectively outraged by the fact that the Trump people did this because Obama and pretty much everyone, has been looking to market to the internet since about 5 minutes after it was invented.
Of course Google and Microsoft and Apple do this too. Amazon, Yahoo...they all follow your searches and phone location and try to pigeonhole your interests in order to market to you; be it products or ideas. It’s only outrageous when conservatives do it though. I’m sure the governments of every country do this also. Hi NSA! Hi Interpol!
I hope this helps.
Not leaving people the heck alone pretty much pervades all of society.
Wikileaks: Emails Show Facebook CEO Zuckerberg Wanted to Meet with Clinton Campaign
by Lucas Nolan18 Oct 2016
Leaked emails from Hillary Clintons campaign chairman, John Podesta, show attempts to organize meetings with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The emails released by WikiLeaks show Sandberg offering to organise a meeting between Podesta and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg.
Sandberg goes on to explain the possible nature of such a meeting, saying that Zuckerburg is meeting with people to learn more about next steps for his philanthropy and social action and is interested in meeting people who could help him understand how to move the needle on the specific public policy issues he cares most about.
It seems that Zuckerburg is interested in influencing policies relating to social oriented objectives (like immigration, education or basic scientific research). It isnt blatantly stated whether or not Zuckerburg agrees with Clintons leaked open borders policy but it does seem that increased immigration is a cause Zuckerburg has aligned himself heavily with by helping to fund the immigration reform organisation FWD.US
Further emails show a meeting between Sandberg and Podesta was organised to step through the research on gender and leadership by women.
This is not the first time Silicon Valley elites have been accused of being involved with political campaigns or attempting to influence the presidential election. Facebook has a history of censoring anti-Hillary Clinton content, while WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has stated that Google is directly engaged in the Clinton campaign. The company has also been accused of censoring search results that may paint Clinton in a negative light.

I briefly joined fb 10 years ago. I understand why some of y’all like it and find it so addictive (and hence I bought the stock after the 2012 IPO). But to me, it seemed like a colossal waste of time. There are only so many hours in the day, and I’d rather spend my online time reading interesting stories here at FR than looking at photos of what Timmy from my 8th grade class barbecued last night. Call me antisocial or a misanthrope or whatever, but I just don’t give a damn about following the lives of kids I went to school with decades ago. Even with current friends, I really have no interest in their vacation photos or their opinions on every minor topic.
Ha, my new cover photo.
Actually, it IS Facebook.
Every employee at every company in SV is trained yearly to understand the legal dangers of venturing outside the company direction and protection.
There is so much $$$ involved, they have to as it will endanger the company to NOT do it.
Many people were fired for their involvement in the Intel Floating Point Flaw coverup.
They basically lied to Executive Staff so they wouldn’t loose their stock options.
There are indications Google is involve in doing the same thing.
Together, these two companies control 90% of the advertising $$$ in the entire world.
This is NOT trivial and the indications it goes all the way to the top and involves both the GOP-e and the DNC.
He has the deadest eyes.......
I’ve always said if the federal government came out with a program called Facebook and to use it you’d have to give up a bunch of personal info, a lot of people would have said “Hell no!”
I don’t believe Zuckerberg had the money and technical expertise to create Facebook. It is owned by the intelligence agencies and now that it’s out that Trump used the info, Zuckerberg is being blamed.
Lousy analogy. There is NOTHING stopping you from not using FB/Twitter.
They’re not like an operating system, where M$ literally required any computer manufacturer which put Window$ on _a_ computer to pay for copies - installed or not - for ALL the computers they made.
They’re not like an OS, which once installed severely limits your options; you couldn’t (at the time) just flip between operating systems.
(And I think the court ruling against M$ in that case was wrong anyway.)
You want a FB alternative? Here: http://MeWe.com
You want a Twitter alternative? Here: http://Gab.AI
You want a YouTube alternative? Here: http://Vimeo.com
You want a Google alternative? Here: http://DuckDuckGo.com
M$ did kinda shove Explorer in users’ faces. They had the advantage of it already being on your system, while Netscape etc required a then-painful download process.
YOU choose to use Facebook et al, when others are just as easy to launch. I mean really - you’re bitching about “monopoly” when alternatives are literally a click/touch one inch above this sentence? Really?
Punchline to Atlas Shrugged: “Get the he11 out of my way!”
I’ve got a system that makes the ads more pleasant. I research Caribbean vacations and tropical cruises. <^..^>
Maybe Youtube should take note. They are going after guns now and deleting content. They already go after conservatives.
I use facebook mostly to stay in touch with my fantasy football friends. Of course I have family and other friends on facebook but usually I stay quiet. What’s the point?
I believe any “free and public virtual space” should be required to allow free speech like any other “free and public physical space”.
“than looking at photos of what Timmy from my 8th grade class barbecued last night.”
LOL that statement gave me a chuckle. I gave up Facebook years ago. Now I just pick up the phone everyday to call Timmy and ask what he had for dinner. Thats what phones are for. :)
What’s shocking to me is how many people are shocked at what they’re learning was going on behind the scenes at FB. Guess what, Zuckerberg is a billionaire. Top people at the company are millionaires. They don’t charge users a dime. Where’s the money come from? They sell your information. As Dan Bongino said on his Podcast the other night - if you’re on Facebook, YOU are the product being sold.
How much do they charge for information? How much did those Russians pay for information? How much did the Obama campaign pay for data? How much does Candy Crush pay for data?
