Condemned doesn't even know he's dead. What you've described is so brain dead simple that it's impossible for the government to consider it, because that would make the entire issue go away, which it appears that neither side wants.

Personally, I'm not as rock-solid for capital punishment as I used to be give how little actual "justice" is to be obtained from the modern American legal system. However, if you're going to do it, just get on with it. A mask, nitrogen and 15 minutes will solve the problem quickly, painlessly, and with no hysterics.
