Trump: 'Take the guns first, go through due process second'

President Trump on Wednesday voiced support for confiscating guns from certain individuals deemed to be dangerous, even if it violates due process rights.

“I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida ... to go to court would have taken a long time,” Trump said at a meeting with lawmakers on school safety and gun violence.

“Take the guns first, go through due process second,” Trump said.

Police were able to search the home of a student that just said that a square root symbol looked like a gun. If they had of found a gun in his home any bets they would have grabbed it ? Cruz was caught with live ammo in his backpack, but no police went to search his home for the guns the ammo could be used for. The only reason was probably because of his last name fitting the education systems ‘do not report to police’ protection.

“Yes I know all the obvious problems with this, but does anyone not wish they had seized that crazy kid’s guns?”

They have a law in Florida they could have used to seize his firearms temporarily until they could determine he was indeed a fruitcake.

There is a ground that works for the NRA. Like why do high capacity guns need to be sold to minors? For every deranged kid that shoots up a public building, the gun lobby looks bad. So let a few reasonable laws exist without scourged earth rhetoric

I am done. The 2A and abortion are my litmus test. Yes, I want the wall and getting rid of obamacare. But, those are my top priorities.
I feel like a fool.

The idea of taking away someone’s guns for psych reasons must be clarified by very specific qualifications. Like you say, overt threats of violence (including domestic), and serious breaks with reality.

Let me try and define the serious break with reality: not based on a diagnosis like bipolar, but based on a medical report that the person was ever delusional. I might actually ban weapons from dx’es like Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia because symptoms of losing touch with reality can show up surprisingly. But there are a lot of people with a dx of bipolar or anxiety or even sociopathy who have NEVER lost touch with reality, even if sometimes their behavior is erratic.

I would hate to see people with depression or ptsd be banned from owning firearms. I would equally hate to see them forego medical care to keep their guns. It’s just not right.

While I am quite pleased with the vast majority of Trump’s actions, we can’t say he was always a solid conservative. He’s a functional conservative more often than I expected, which is a surprise. But odd deviations like this are what I expected, while I supported him.

They had plenty of time to commit or arrest Nikolas Cruz. They didn’t do it. So this process would mean take the guns and do no due process according to what just happened.

Again - there are already reasonable laws on the books.

Again - Cruz was investigated 39 times but never arrested (including bringing ammo to school) because of an Obama order to NOT arrest students because that’ll give them a criminal record.

That same criminal record that was checked when he purchased the guns.

I will not allow my rights to be further impeded because some whining snot nosed punks backed by a socialist oppression force doesn’t like me or my views - especially when the safeguards already in place were wantonly violated.

Trump’s comments on the surface are indeed outrageous.

However, note that police can detain people and hold weapons for a short period without a formal arrest while an investigation is being performed.

Also note that there can be removal of weapons without the owner of the weapons having a say beforehand. This happens a lot with protection from abuse (PFA) orders. Yes, there is a warrant to remove weapons, but the owner doesn’t get a say before the judge until a later hearing.

Yes I know all the obvious problems with this, but does anyone not wish they had seized that crazy kid’s guns? Seems to me that should not have violated due process. Insane and death threats to shoot up a school should equal arrest and take his guns.

This is perfect example of bad Leftist policy, which led to no due process being initiated against this nut case.

If people were in charge who actually had public safety in mind, this kid would have been dealt with a dozen times over—and very probably he would not have become a mass murderer.

Wherever Democrats are in control, this sort of routine, intentional dereliction will lead to crimes like this happening again and again. And then they have the gall to come after our guns—the law-abiding and non-violent?

Then why wasn’t he? How many chances were there for the authorities to have done that?

... why do high capacity guns need to be sold to minors?

Oh, I dunno. How about: Why are illegal drugs like heroin and crack sold to minors?

Why does making something previously legal illegal create an entirely new criminal class, make criminals of otherwise law-abiding citizens, and create a Black Market for the now-contraband item?

For every deranged kid that shoots up a public building, the gun lobby looks bad.

How do the "deranged kids" look? Their parents? How about school administrators and LEO's who ignore multiple warnings, how do they look?

Trump is on very, very thin ice.

They were his words. Believe it. And he brags about how his unscripted comments and tweets are truly who he is.

Trump and his buddies think my son, who served as a Marine in Afghanistan while under the age of 20, shouldn't be able to buy a firearm until he's 21. Pathetic.
