Trump Refuses to Back Down on Mexico Paying for Wall

Trump Refuses to Back Down on Mexico Paying for Wall, Mexican President’s Trip to White House Called Off (Full title)

President Trump has refused to back down on his promise to make Mexico pay for a wall along the United States-Mexico border, prompting a White House trip by Mexican President Peña Nieto to be canceled. Trump and Nieto decided to call off the planned visit in Washington, DC, after a phone conversation about the proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall and how it would be paid for — in one way or another — by Mexico.

The Washington Post reports:

Tentative plans for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to make his first visit to the White House to meet with President Trump were scuttled this week after a testy call between the two leaders ended in an impasse over Trump’s promised border wall, according to U.S. and Mexican officials.

Peña Nieto was eyeing an official trip to Washington this month or in early March, but both countries agreed to call off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico’s position that it would not fund construction of a border wall that the Mexican people widely consider offensive, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential conversation.

Since 2015, Trump has promised Americans that a border wall — currently held up in the prototype stage — would be built along the southern border to stop illegal immigration and cartel-driven drug flow into the country.

Mexico, Trump has committed, will somehow end up paying for the border wall, whether that comes in the form of taxing remittances to have illegal aliens from Mexico actually pay for the wall or tariffs on imported goods from Mexico.

If Mexico wants to continue to give us attitude then we can always repeat what we did from 1946 to 1848, i.e., take over Mexico through military conquest.

Finally someone in DC is standing up to and not caving in to a Mexican “leader”. Time for Nieto to start fixing that dump of a country on his own!

A 10-mile buffer zone would “pay” for the wall, imho.

“1946 to 1848?”

With as many Mexicans in the Southwest as white loyal Americans, I don’t think your suggestion is workable.

What happened to the idea of taking a percentage of remittances that people send to Mexico?

The USA is a major source of income to Mexico both legal and illegal why would Mexico want that cut off?

A Western Union and other EFT providers which send all the cash to Mexico from the US, enjoying a 10% surcharge would pay for the wall in a month.

Yes! Start taxing the remittances and put it in a “go build me a wall fund”.
Why isn’t POTUS doing this-could be done by an EO?

it is not possible

there is no way to confiscate such funds and if there is an attempt, the numerous other ways to transmit funds internationally will pick up the slack

“What happened to the idea of taking a percentage of remittances that people send to Mexico?”

If you’d read the article you’d know.

“Mexico, Trump has committed, will somehow end up paying for the border wall, whether that comes in the form of taxing remittances to have illegal aliens from Mexico actually pay for the wall or tariffs on imported goods from Mexico.”

The sticking point was not directly about Mexico paying, it was about acknowledging Mexico’s position that it won’t. I think Trump is probably right to call it off because once you start publicly acknowledging the other side’s position you are halfway there to accommodating it.

A tax on imported goods from Mexico won’t be paid by Mexico. It will be paid by Americans buying the goods.

That said I don’t care who pays for it.

Just build the damn thing.
