Global warming is leaving animals who take on a white coat in winter exposed as snow cover retreats. But scientists say hot spots for "evolutionary rescue" could see them adapt.
There are 21 species of animals around the world that transform from brown in the summer to snowy white in the winter to blend in with their surroundings — from tiny prey animals like the Siberian lemming to the noble Peary caribou, which takes on a shaggy white coat in winter.
But habitats with extreme seasons are among the most vulnerable to climate change. Winters are arriving later, and snow melting earlier. And animals like the snowshoe hare are being caught out in the wrong look for the season.
"Ultimately, the world must reduce carbon dioxide emissions or else the climate effects will overwhelm the ability of many species to adapt," Eugenia Bragina, one of the scientists behind the study, said.

Ironically, white people are being threatened by a growing number of snowflakes.

World governments should enlist the unemployed, the poor and downtrodden to camouflage paint the threatened animals.

Meh. Years ago, in Jr. High School, we briefly studied some moth that normally perched on birch trees, and had white wings to better camouflage itself. Except that for a while during the early industrial revolution, the birch trees in one area were constantly coated with ash, so they were grey instead of white, so the moth population in that area changed color over successive generations so that it blended with the new grey trees. And when pollution declined later in the century, and the trees became white again, the moths adapted again.
It’ll take longer, but those animals within the species that don’t get as much of a white coat will be more likely to survive than the all-white ones. At least until the Grand Solar Minimum really gets underway, and we start seeing remnants of snow cover extending into June and picking up again in early September.
More likely due to cross breeding, just like the human race is getting more brown.
There is so much anti-white hate going around that I am surprised they have not flown to South Korea to insist the Winter Olympics are racist. Perhaps they have not thought this through yet.
Snowflakes survive well in cold weather - they should try it.
