Why is liberal California the poverty capital of America?

Guess which state has the highest poverty rate in the country? Not Mississippi, New Mexico, or West Virginia, but California, where nearly one out of five residents is poor. That’s according to the Census Bureau’s Supplemental Poverty Measure, which factors in the cost of housing, food, utilities and clothing, and which includes noncash government assistance as a form of income.

Given robust job growth and the prosperity generated by several industries, it’s worth asking why California has fallen behind, especially when the state’s per-capita GDP increased approximately twice as much as the U.S. average over the five years ending in 2016 (12.5%, compared with 6.27%).

It’s not as though California policymakers have neglected to wage war on poverty. Sacramento and local governments have spent massive amounts in the cause. Several state and municipal benefit programs overlap with one another; in some cases, individuals with incomes 200% above the poverty line receive benefits. California state and local governments spent nearly $958 billion from 1992 through 2015 on public welfare programs, including cash-assistance payments, vendor payments and “other public welfare,” according to the Census Bureau. California, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nation’s welfare recipients

Shocking! The more money you give to people, the deeper you fall into poverty. That would only be a surprise to liberals.

This is a good article that correctly points out how CA has not reformed welfare, breeding more poverty. It also points the finger at poor immigrants that have no job skills or work ethic; wasting money on things like the train (instead of lowering taxes to create jobs); liberal land use refs that make real estate Sky-high; and the global warming scam that makes energy in CA cost 50% more than in other states.

To ask is to answer. Socialism is not “sustainable”, despite how much liberals love to scold the rest of us on that topic. Socialism only continues where it can acquire the resources it destroys from someone else or somewhere else.

you have to remember that it isn’t their money but other people’s money. And remember that in their minds, they are doing the right thing and they like to feel good about themselves.

Dish out the popcorn, relax, and watch the ‘tards destroy the state. We can then move in, guillotine the ‘tards, and return it to its former glory.

That is, if the big one doesn’t take care of the ‘tards before they do it to themselves.

Every statewide elected office is held by a Democrat. They have super majorities in both chambers of the state legislature. They own California’s mess, which is only getting worse day by day.

White liberal elites in California have ZERO incentive to reform welfare or to reject 3rd world types because THOSE PEOPLE KEEP THEM IN POWER.

Good article and amazing that it was published in the lib LA Times. Undoubtedly, Babs Streisand spit her doughnut across the room while reading it in bed.

And, of course, people are commenting how they are getting up and moving to Texas! Where they will, undoubtedly, turn that place blue in the face.

Socialism is demoralizing. Why work 80 hours a week and make great personal and financial sacrifices for no gain at all.

And it is the people make these sacrifices who move our economy and technology forward. Not the people sitting on their couches day in and day out watching Oprah.

Everything is more expensive - especially in So Cal - average rent is $2000 a month, gas is over $3.oo a gallon, car insurance is double the cost compared to other states. But the jobs created are low skill - hotel workers, warehouse workers, etc. jobs that average $28,000 to $30,000 a year where it takes $50,000 just to break even. California is a screwed up mess thanks to Jerry Clown.
