Apple Confirmed A Longtime Conspiracy Theory, Gave Regular Customers A Big Reason To Distrust It
Business Insider ^ | 12-21-2017 | Troy Wolverton

Apple has long inspired an almost religious devotion among customers and tech aficionados — but it just seriously undermined its fans' faith and loyalty.

The company on Wednesday acknowledged what some people have long suspected: that it has been secretly stifling the performance of older iPhones.

Critics have accused the company in the past, based on anecdotal evidence, of purposely slowing phones to compel users to upgrade to the latest model. While Apple admitted to the practice on Wednesday, it sought to underscore that it had done so for a purely altruistic reason: to prevent older phones from shutting down unexpectedly.

The justification hasn't mollified Apple's outraged fans. If anything, the company's statement has stoked the conspiracy theories, and for good reason.

Apple Was Caught Red-Handed

By the company's own admission, it's been throttling the performance of iPhones since last year.

Apple hasn't explained why it didn't disclose the practice until now, after GeekBench released charts based on its data that showed how older iPhones were not performing as quickly as they had when they launched.

Apple's secrecy — a badge of honor when it comes to unveiling new products — is certain to encourage distrust in this situation. Apple comes across as an organization that was intentionally hiding something, something it acknowledged only when it was caught red-handed.

I am convinced that Microsoft has done this to their old operating systems by sending “updates” that cause the system to run poorly so that you will be induced to upgrade.

Newsflash: battery life is not a constant! After 500 cycles they lose capacity.

I suspected something. A month or two ago, I downloaded the Apple "update," the new operating system, on my iPad Pro which I purchased brand new last Spring. I have noticed that the iPad is slower and not as responsive as before the update. I am not going to download the update on my iPhone 7 which I just purchased new during the Summer.

It has nothing to do with the battery, the slow down is hard coded.

I suspect they did the same to older iPads. I have two iPads, one of the older iPad 4 with the larger charging port and a new thin iPad. At some point there was an update and the old iPad slowed to a crawl on the internet. The apps worked fine but surfing the net became all but impossible.

What if a car company purposely made your car more inefficient every time brought it in for service?

Apple does not own my phone. I purchased it. They are crippling my personal property. This is a blatantly dishonest business practice and I hope Apple gets slapped with a huge class action lawsuit.

Fantastic analogy. I’ve been an Apple person since I started using computers, but I am fed up with them. They are the anti-capitalist robber barons.

I don’t know about Micro$oft, but Firefox most certainly has. Except I ‘upgraded’ to Brave instead of the new flavor of Firefox that would have killed off my scriptblockers and spyware killers.
