President Commutes Sentence of Iowa Meatpacking Executive
New York Times ^ | December 20, 2017 | Mitch Smith

President Trump on Wednesday commuted the prison sentence of Sholom Rubashkin, whose Iowa meatpacking plant was the target of a huge immigration raid in 2008, and whose 27-year prison sentence angered many Orthodox Jews.

Mr. Rubashkin made national headlines nine years ago after federal agents arrived by helicopter at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville, Iowa, and detained nearly 400 undocumented immigrants, including several children, who were working there. Mr. Rubashkin was the company’s chief executive, and the plant had been the largest kosher meatpacking operation in the country. He was later convicted of bank fraud in federal court.

I had never really thought about it (just imagining Lazer Wolf types ordering whole steers, I guess), but assuming the undocumented workers were goyim, wouldn’t there need to be safeguards against contamination in case they had come in contact with pork before their shift? Monitored hand-washing, perhaps?

How many orthodox Jews come from Guatemala?

Obama refused to help this guy. He only helped Muslims and “criminals of color”.

Hope this makes Obama real mad.

I remember this case. The sheer number of undocumented workers was astounding and reading the article there was a lot more shenanigans with the business. Looks like Mr. Rubashkin took the rap for financial fraud in exchange for dropping immigration charges. Pleading guilty to financial fraud in conservative Iowa was just plain bad legal advice. One thing I’ve learned is Iowans don’t look highly on folks who cheat on their taxes or commit financial fraud.

I don’t want to make a big deal about this as I truly believe that Alan Dershowitz is a free thinking honorable person who calls it as he sees it, but clearly he’s been in Trump court whenever he appears on TV. Is this related to Trump’s commutation? Don’t know, but I for one have appreciated Mr. Dershowitz’s support of the president.

Perhaps the article isn’t written clearly but I got the impression that the Guatemalans were simply illegal (not Orthodox Jews). Maybe there is more to the story NOT listed in the article but if he cost banks $26 million, had 300 illegals including children working for him... I think his prison sentence was justified. As always, the article may be written to make Trump look bad but if not.... I don’t agree with commuting the sentence.

“We cannot fathom how truly sound and sensible sentencing rules could call for a life sentence — or anything close to it — for Mr. Rubashkin, a 51-year-old, first-time, nonviolent offender,” they wrote. The letter is signed by Janet Reno, William Barr, Richard Thornburgh, Edwin Meese III, Ramsey Clark and Nicholas Katzenbach, all of whom served as attorney general.

Haha! EVen these people were unable to convince Obama to intervene. Being the coward that he is, doesn’t surprise me.

Concur. Having 3 to 5 illegal immigrants working could be viewed as an oversight, but having almost 400 illegal immigrants, including some children working there demonstrates a pattern designed to profit at the expense of others. That other financial fraud was involved as well sort of seal the case that this was a case of greed to the point of extortion.

Wonder why the kosher company chose Iowa to set up shop?

Who is this guy that so many congressmen went out on a limb for? I know nothing about this case other than what is in the article.

I doubt it. He’s enjoying his ill-gotten gains... doesn’t have time for too much else. Sort of like when he was _resident.

What I also completely disagree with is the debate that his sentence was an equivalent to a life sentence due to his age. So what? Does that make every 55 year old “eligible” to commit fraud etc.. and receive a slap on the hand vs a 30 year old that did the same crime? If his crime cost the banks 26 million... who “paid” for that? I’m assuming we did... maybe more to this case but IMHO if there isn’t... I’m not agreeing to the decision.

The judge, an obvious anti-Semitic handed down a 27 year sentence. He served eight years. Fraudsters have gotten far less for more egregious cases. Yahoo has the story twisted and the comments are sickening. There’s a lot of Trump hate out there.

I don’t see the reason for the commutation. If we’re against 400 illegal immigrants and bank fraud...

There is no question of guilt there.

In my eyes, not the law, the man is a modern day slave owner, human trafficker, and child labor violations.

Just because he is a Jew doesn’t make him Holy if he lives in sin and crime.

He wasn’t convicted of any immigration a related crimes.

I find that odd but I’ve never been to Iowa.

No doubt Obama is a coward but I don’t think that entered in to the question.

This is just Obama demonstrating his hatred of Jews.

I think the issue is both political but also fairness. The man is given a life sentence for a white collar crime. I think Trump got him out, but he still must provide restitution. You right, lots of clout, and I can assure you Trump made a good behind the scenes.

Like I said, I’ve always wondered why Dersherwitz is almost 95% a Trump defender.
