Amtrak derailment: Conductor was in cab with engineer before deadly Washington train crash
NBC News ^ | 12/20/2017 | Phil Helsel

A conductor was in the cab with the train engineer before a deadly derailment in Washington state, a federal transportation board member said Tuesday, adding that the train’s brakes were eventually engaged automatically, not by the engineer.

"Absolutely distraction is one of our most-wanted-list priorities at NTSB," National Transportation Safety Board member Bella Dinh-Zarr said at a news conference Tuesday, although she added that the federal board has not determined a cause of the deadly accident outside Tacoma. Three people were killed when the Amtrak train headed from Seattle to Portland, Oregon, careened off a bridge at around 7:33 a.m. PT.

The train was speeding, traveling at 80 mph in a 30-mph stretch of track, investigators have already said.

All of the crew members on the train were injured and were hospitalized, and investigators are making arrangements to interview them, Dinh-Zarr said.

A conductor "who was getting experience and familiarizing himself with the territory" was in the cab with the engineer, she said, while the train's actual conductor was in the passenger area. Being familiar with the territory is one of the duties of the conductor, she said.

"As far as exactly what they were doing, we will be talking with them and finding that out," Dinh-Zarr said. It is standard protocol at the NTSB to look at all of the cell phone records of all the crew members after an accident, she said.

From the report: """As far as exactly what they were doing, we will be talking with them and finding that out," Dinh-Zarr said. It is standard protocol at the NTSB to look at all of the cell phone records of all the crew members after an accident, she said.""

Yes, many people will want to know what the engineer and conductor were doing. It is quite obvious they were NOT doing their job.

Before we get driverless cars on the road...perhaps we should have driverless trains...that automatically slow down when they’re supposed to.

I can see monotony and distraction affecting train engineers. You don’t have to steer. Why watch out what’s ahead? You can’t stop the train quick enough to avoid hitting whatever you see.

You could say the same for airplane pilots.

Regarding the automatic speed control mechanism that’s being deployed, and referred to as very expensive, I mentioned earlier that my car GPS tells me the speed of the car and the speed limit. A GPS-based speed control mechanism seems like it would be cheap.

There are (and were in this case) speed limit signs.

A female? The recording I heard was a male. Or somebody with a seriously husky voice.

“”Amtrak President and CEO Richard Anderson said the NTSB investigation will determine whether positive train control would have prevented the crash.””

Lots of attempts to divert attention from gross incompetence or negligence on the part of Amtrak employees by constantly raising the ‘positive train control’ card.

The public needs to be asking questions like: “Exactly, how many locations between Seattle and Portland require the engineer to slow down or sound the whistle?”

This accident was another example of gross incompetence by government workers and managers.

First red flag, that name. Bella Dinn-Zarr. Don’t expect anything less than Orwellian out of that one if she’s even capable of rising to that level. Sounds like the hellspawn of Bella Abzug and Howard Zinn with a hyphenated surname added in for even more progressive goodness. So, it’s genetic.

Second, they’re going to stonewall like crazy about this “conductor” being with the engineer, I’m getting strong vibes that they were engaging in politically protected activities.

“A GPS-based speed control mechanism seems like it would be cheap.”

Therein lies the problem. No room for a union slush fund.
