Pontiac Silverdome, former home of the Detroit Lions, has failed partial implosion
Fox News ^ | 12/3/2017 | Travis Fedschun

An iconic sports stadium in the Detroit area was supposed to meet its end on Sunday, but not everything went according to plan.

Officials were supposed to conduct a partial implosion of the Pontiac Silverdome around 8:30 a.m., with a blast originally set to break the metal beams supporting the upper ring of the dome and causing the structure to fall to the ground.

But after some blasts went off and a plume of smoke enveloped the former home of the Detroit Lions, the structure was still standing.

City officials told FOX 2 Detroit the implosion failed, adding that "what was supposed to happen, did not."

I'm not sure why the earlier thread on this got pulled.

There may be some confusion since there have been some statements made along the lines of "Yeah, we MEANT for this to happen! We were just cutting some beams."

There are also lots of news stories out there talking about today's planned Silverdome implosion. None that I looked at said "we're just cutting some beams with explosives, but you won't see much."

A supporting tweet from the local NBC affiliate:

“An official on the scene told Local 4 that the demolition didn’t go according to plan.”

Some of the comments are gold!

“Nothing regarding the Lions ever goes as planned. If you really want to watch something implode, watch the Lions versus Ravens at 1 today. #firejimcaldwell”

The whole place sold at auction in the early 2000’s for only $500,000!

I assume they play in a new taxpayer-funded stadium which is easily affordabe with Detroit’s booming economy.

They must have hired the engineering firm that pulled this stunt 2 weeks ago in NW Colorado:

So, they used the GM engineers who designed all the crap cars I was stupid enough to buy in the 70s and 89s.

Whoa... that’s definitely not a good outcome. Can you imagine being the demolition company now being asked to finish the job on a building that is this compromised?

Have taken in a number of events there... great concert was the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels tour that also had Santana and Iggy Pop (who was booed off the stage). There was enough fireworks at the end of the Stones concert that it could have come down then!

In America today it seems that a lot goes wrong and has to be redone.

From the simple, like getting a fast food order correct, to the complex, like demolishing an old arena or navigating a state of the art US Navy ship in the western Pacific.

Hve professional standards, competence and ability really been falling for the last 50 years?

If so, why?

“They must have hired the engineering firm that pulled this stunt 2 weeks ago in NW Colorado:”

I watched an attempted implosion of an old Purina silo in Nashville in the 80’s. Bam!, Bam!, Bam! Nothing...... The walls were at least three feet thick.

Another funny comment I saw on this:

“Classic mistake here.... They didn’t account for the tolerance it built up witnessing so many previous implosions.”

I was the OP of that original thread and asked the mods. to pull it after MD Expat in PA read that what the media/city officials(and myself, since I took their word for it)most likely misinterpreted what was REALLY suppose to happen.

My mistake was taking the word of the local TV reporter who said she heard from "a local city official" that "what we were told was going to happen...did not happen"...and thus called it a "fail".

Fact is, I turned it on about 5 minutes after it was suppose to occur, reading the big "Implosion of Silverdome Imminent"(or something to that effect)on the screen. So all I heard were the talking heads saying something failed.

With other information to the contrary thought it best to just have that thread pulled until there's an "official" account from the demo. Co. itself...and not the fake news outlets/city officials version of events.
