I took it as an indication of how desperate the army's getting to get recruits. They have expanded the roles of women - despite the obvious downsides - they have embraced accepting openly homosexual folks - despite the really obvious downsides to that - and now "transsexuals", whatever they are.

I expect that the memo announcing mentally ill soldiers was real enough: they just can't get enough volunteers.

I wonder what would happen if 1. our government decided to actually search out the best men they could find and make a military career really attractive or 2. See if there wouldn't be some glimmer of patriotism sitting latent out there that they could appeal to so that we'd get more quality people. Our leaders don't seem to understand that to have world-beating armed forces, we need bright, energetic people to prepare for and fight wars. We can't just keeping burning out the few volunteers we have now with back-to-back deployments.

Stupid/defective/weak/divisive/sick people only make the enemy's job easier.

The Army seems to be having uniquely bad retention problems right now that the other branches aren't dealing with.
