Update 7:38p.m.:

Now the Moore campaign is walking back its previous statement. They have agreed to a debate with Strange sans moderator.

"We are glad Luther Strange has agreed to our challenge of an honest and open debate, with no conditions," the Moore campaign said.

A Moore campaign spokeswoman said the details haven't been worked out yet.........

Original story:

Senator Luther Strange campaign has agreed to hold a debate with challenger Roy Moore without a moderator, although the incumbent senator slammed his opponent for having "ridiculous demands."......

Earlier Wednesday, Moore said he would only have a debate with Strange styled after the Lincoln-Douglas debates of the 1850's, with the two candidates going back and forth on the issues without a moderator. Moore's request came after he backed out of a candidates' forum scheduled for Sept. 21 at Samford University and sponsored by the Alabama Policy Institute. Moore said he reneged on agreeing to that debate because the institute's president is also treasurer for the Mitch McConnell-controlled super PAC that has been running negative ads against Moore.......

Roy Moore and Luther Strange will debate the old fashioned way without biased moderators or reporters getting in the way.

Sounds good to me.

Moore backed out of a business as usual debate format because its sponsor is linked to the Mitch McConnell Super PAC smearing Moore.

Mitch McConnell was named the leading enemy of President Trump by Steve Bannon in that 60 Minutes interview recently.

This is how all political debates should be.

I could see a chess clock or something similar being the “moderator”, just to keep things on point and moving, and helping to avoid each talking over the other.

Exactly, I agree. The national debates that we’ve had between the parties are nothing but sand bag routines for the press to attack conservatives. By the way, where is that hog that ambushed Romney?

Been donating to Moore so I got his email talking about this. McConnell working with Rove to try to do a Thad Cochran type betrayal in Alabama....

Glad to hear it...so have I, several times. Time to donate again. The wife and I will be heading back to the polls on the 26th for the run off vote. I pray we have the the opportunity to place a 3rd vote for him. If you live in LA (lower Alabama) you no doubt know what a fine man Judge Moore is and what a disgusting crook Strange is. He basically stole the Senate seat by holding an ethics investigation over the governor’s head to sway him to select him in order to hopefully stop the investigation.

I’m not familiar with Alabama politics. Is the primary winner basically assured of victory in November or will the general election be seriously contested?

We had a debate in mo several years ago. It started out with a moderator but both candidates kept telling the moderator to shut up.
I think it was the ashcroft/wheaton debate. A truly awesome debate.

Awesome! Is it on YouTube? That sounds so refreshing after watching "moderators" interject, become part of the debate rather than moderating, and become antagonistic repeatedly toward Trump.

I don’t understand why a person who is ahead double digits would agree to debate someone who is losing. Moore has nothing to gain. Strange is losing and this is a hail Mary pass hoping Moore will screw up. Moore has a potential to lose everything and Strange has nothing to lose.

It was by far the best debate I have ever heard. I have no idea whether there is a video. Ashcroft won the debate. Wheaton and the moderator lost. Lol.

I live in Mississippi - wish I had a vote to give Moore but will do what I can as an out of Stater - still chapped from what they did to keep Thad Cochran in here....

Precisely what I think.

IMHO conservatives should promote that approach for all elections. Candidates should put their debates online, whether or not the TV covers live.

And there should be no limitation on what visual aids are used by the participants - provided only that all data be properly sourced, and made available to the opposition at least a day in advance.

I defiantly want to see this debate with no moderator. If it works, it could lock out the crooked press fixing Presidential debates.

Roy Moore opening statement:

I will not vote for any of Trump's/Schumer's amnesties and will do everything I can to stop them. This Strange guy will vote how Trump and Mitch and Chucky tell him. This debate is over, I am going home now, bye.

Politics seems to work that way, but Roy Moore is a big guy who stands up for what he believes in, a guy who’s lost his job twice for his convictions.

The kind of guy we need to elect to public office.

If you’ve read any of the debate here on Free Republic over Jeb Bush and Terri Schiavo being put to death Jeb’s supporters said “Do you want him to lose his job?”.

So afraid of this. Democrats elected Cochran, McDaniel had it locked up before the street money, robocalls that he's a racist, and illegal votes by Dems who voted in the Democrat primary. After McDaniel had accumulated thousands of fraudulent votes, a Haley Barbour judge shut him down. Open primaries are there for one reason, to manipulate the elections.
