$200,000 cops: why NY property taxes keep soaring

Wonder why New York property taxes are sky-high, particularly in the Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley suburbs around the city? The Empire Center’s latest analysis flags one key reason: the astounding pay doled out to government workers in those areas — especially uniformed services, like police and firefighters.

For the second year in a row, the center found, 47 of the top 50 highest-paid local-government workers outside New York City were police officers — with five of the top seven on the Town of Ramapo payroll.

The No. 1 earner, Ramapo Police Officer Thomas Donnelly, pulled in $441,968 in the year ending last March. Four other Rockland County cops joined him in the top 10.

In many cities, there are two tiers of workers. Some have caps on their salary, and are not allowed to make more despite how many overtime hours they work; overtime given as compensatory time that they take off elsewhere in the year. But others like cops and firemen don't have caps on their salary, and are paid cash for the overtime; they milk it for all it's worth. Scandalous, yes, and the rules should be changed to put caps on cops and firemen salaries but their unions will block any attempts at capping their salary. Result is bankrupting cities.

All he’s doing is working OT and going to court for every little thing he can. His pension, after they factor in his 3 highest years, will be around $200K or more, on the low end, and up to $300k or more, on the high end, depending on how long he stays on the job.

Pension is often calculated as a percentage of the average of their best three years.
So let's say it is 70% of $398K / $400K / $411K and you then potentially have a man or woman who is retired at 46 y.o. and drawing a lifetime pension of $282K until they croak.
Pretty sweet deal for that person.

If someone would have told me in the mid-1970s when I graduated from high school that I should get a job as a cop or fireman so I could get $100 an hour RETIRED I would have laughed at them.

Good coin was 10-15 bucks an hour for WORKING.

To criticize this jackass is to criticize the union. So nothing will change. We just need to accept the marginal losses.

Or bust the Union. Once a law is passed that no public sector Unions are allowed; things will get nutty for a while then settle down.

The worst thing in the world is a public sector Union for the taxpayers.

Unfortunately, that won’t happen in New York. So many are promised reasonable assurances making it impossible to break it -— it’s effectively socialism. The state itself isn’t completely socialistic. All but the urban areas voted for Trump.

I love New York. I love NYC. Upstate is unheralded. Long Island is ground zero for our victory against the United Socialistic Kingdom of Assholes.

This sort of excess is financially unsustainable by the taxpayers. As a result, you now have states like Illinois and Connecticut on the brink ok bankruptcy. Reform appears to be impossible. The unions won’t budge. As a result, they kill the golden goose.

The current younger or middle-aged police will never see more than a small percentage of their pension in many states.

That is one reason they know they need to get what they can while they can.

It is amazing how good non-accounting people are at accounting when it comes to their own account!

Then NYC will go bankrupt and head down the path of Baltimore and Chicago. Eventually, it will suck the whole state in.

Sounds like NY state has the problem, not the city. In the city they can always milk the rich with more income tax.

Biggest mistake I’ve made in life is becoming an upper tier White Collar worker. No overtime for many thousands of overtime hours. Retirement at 67 while I watch many of my pears retire in their 40’s and 50’s living comfortably on my tax dollars.

add to that the Rochester practice of funneling all OT hours to soon to retire PD/FD, as pension is based on the last 4 years of earning

Simple answer is to base pensions on base pay only. Of course it’ll never happen.

New York State retirement system is divided into tiers, with tier six the newest. What retirement plan you are in is determined by hire date. If hired in the last 5 years or so, employees do not get retirement based on overtime. In fact it isn’t much of a retirement plan at all. The problem of overly generous retirement has been corrected. Also NY retirement system is well funded and won’t drain the state coffers, so long as Cuomo doesn’t get his hands on the fund.
