Actually, I have some relatives that live in Bangor, ME and they say Stephen King isn't that well liked at all. In fact he's pretty much considered an arrogant jerk that treats fans like crap and likes to constantly flaunt his fame and money. He does things like attending a local concert or baseball game and buying up every ticket in an entire section so he doesn't have to mingle with hoi-polloi.

Years ago, I used to see him in Fenway Park sitting with the regular people. He was quite the Red Sox fan for a while. So not sure how true that is. Aside from his politics, he always struck me as a down-to-earth guy. But maybe he's changed over the years.

It's a shame he's such a left-winger. Fortunately, he keeps that crap out of his books, at least the books of his that I actually read. Most of the older ones. "Under the Dome" was the last of the newer ones I read. He's no Hemingway but a good storyteller.

One thing he said years ago that always stuck with me. To be a good writer, you must spend 4-6 hours every day either writing your own work or reading somebody else's work. Every single day. I think he commits himself to write at least 10 pages every day and then he reads other people's books.

He also calls television a "poison to creativity" which I agree with. I saw the movie version of "It" over the weekend and the book was much, much better. As it usually is.

With the advent of Kindle, I’ve got a plastic milk crate full of King paperbacks I’m thinking of tossing, after fall bookcase cleaning.
