Texas chemical plant in critical condition, raising possibility of explosion

A chemical plant in Crosby, Texas was in critical condition Tuesday night after its refrigeration system and inundated backup power generators failed, raising the possibility that the volatile chemicals on the site would explode.

The situation at the Crosby site has become serious,” the company said on its Web page. “At this time, while we do not believe there is any imminent danger, the potential for a chemical reaction leading to a fire and/or explosion within the site confines is real.”

Why people are so dense is beyond me. Ship in ice. A refrigerated space is a cooler. Dry ice if this stuff is explosive with water present.

Better helicopter in some industrial size generators.

That probably would not help more than a teeny bit if the plant makes peroxides.

Much like Ammonium Nitrate, the molecule itself has all the oxygen needed to support a violent oxidation/decomposition reaction. Yes, even Hydrogen Peroxide if suff. concentrated.

Agreed, but it will take time to get them hooked up. 100 tons of dry ice would fit on 3 semis. There is a lot of time 3 semis of dry ice could buy. Takes a day or so to set up those generators and then there is fuel.

100 tons would take 5 semis.

It buys time. Getting enough power to the plant and fixing/replacing cooling is going to be hard. Even helicoptered in ind gens will take time. I prefer the plant does not go BOOM.

I couldn’t open the article without subscribing, maybe I have read too many of their articles. Here is another link to the story if it doesn’t open for others.

You have to get the coolant to the right location or it is worthless.

And getting metal too cool is ngeeous - the metal can get brittle and fail.

I am sure their engineers are working with the temprorary generator companies (AGREKO, et. al.) to get some power or refrigerant online ASAP

Those temp companies do great work.

I had to get a temp boiler on site one time, less than 24 hours from call to start up.

Same with a cooling tower (that took a bit longer because of conditions).

There is this old one about Texas fires:

man dies and heads to final reward. St Peter meets him and says it is a bit late for entry today, so, we are going to put you up in a hotel for the evening. New morning St Pete meets with him and asks how was the evening. He says, it was nice but we have a slightly nicer place in Texas at Barton Ranch. St pete says gee, well, lets do this again, we put you up tonight and have you come back tomorrow see how you like this one. Next morning St. Pete says well, how was last night? Texan says, it was good but we got this place in Texas called Turtle Creek Mansion which is a wee bit better. St Pete is now exasperated, grabs him over to the side of a cloud and points his head down into Hades with all its fire and brimstone. St Pete says, you got anything like that in Texas? Texan says, why hell no but we got two ole boys down in Houston put that fire out in 30 minutes.

Ok, I’m going out on a limb here and guess that you’ve probably never even unloaded a semi full of regular ice.
Much less 3 to 5 semis full, somewhere off in a flood zone.

Idiotic. Maybe you should look up their phone number and call them with your idea. They could probably use a good laugh about now.

Where is this? Is this connected to Harvey and damage from it?

Ship in ice.

It's August. In Texas.

RE: Heaven and Hell and Texans

It was a while back, but a Congressman from Texas was on the long journey home from Washington. He stopped to visit his congressional colleague from Tennessee. The Tennessean gave him a tour of Knoxville. They went down near the river to see the creation. The Tennessean proudly exclaimed “ This is our great University, The University of Tennessee”. He went on to extol the great professors and opportunities for the bright students flocking to the campus. He called the chancellor who graciously greeted the congressman from Texas with a Tennessee orange T shirt emblazoned UT.

While traveling, the Texan thought on his visit and concluded that we need a university like that in Texas.

Alas, disaster struck. While philandering in a gambling hall under the hill in Natchez, the Congressman from the great but fledgling State of Texas was murdered. He went immediately to hell. The fires burned heatedly and though not consumed, his hair, eyebrows and clothing were scorched. On presentation to the devil, the evil one saw the UT shirt and decided this must be a Holy Man and cast the Texan out. He found himself dazed but alive once more on the road back to Texas.

As soon as he got home, he called a committee to meet and they created a University, The University of Texas. To his day many Texans proudly wear T shirts of Burnt Orange bearing the logo UT.

Once again, like the Alamo and San Jacinto, Texans became indebted to Tennessee for greatness.

Updated 5:05 p.m. August 30, 2017: It now looks likely there will be a fire or explosion at the Arkema ammonia plant in Crosby, according to officials.

The plant is currently submerged in water and Rich Rowe, Arkema Inc.’s president and CEO, told the Texas Tribune that the organic peroxide used in the company manufacturing process has begun to heat up. With the flooding in the area it will not be possible for employees to enter the facility to try to prevent a fire or explosion, and by the time employees do get back inside Rowe says the chemicals were certainly degrade and catch fire or explode.

The company has already evacuated all employees and a 1.5 mile radius around the plant has also been cleared to assure that no one will be harmed if the plant does explode. However, Rowe says that any such incident will not be felt beyond the boundaries of the plant, and insists to the Tribune that the company is just being “conservative.”
