Hundreds protest at UNC-Chapel Hill Silent Sam monument

Chapel Hill, N.C. — A student was arrested along with other protesters when about 800 people gathered at McCorkle Place on Tuesday night to demand the removal of the Silent Sam Confederate statue from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus.

The statue was surrounded by two sets of barricades earlier Tuesday morning in an effort to prevent protesters getting close to it. The barriers, combined with the fact that the statue is continually monitored by surveillance cameras, prompted many to state that Silent Sam is better protected than any student on the campus.

At times Tuesday night, police had difficulty controlling the crowds as protesters chanted and marched for several hours, at times taking to Franklin Street and forcing the closure of the road, as officers dressed in riot gear guarded the monument.

"It doesn't need to be in the middle of campus. In a museum is fine, it's ok, but here in the middle of campus, it promotes violence," said protester Zaria Williams.

07052015 SILENT SAM STATUE AT UNC CHAPEL HILL VANDALIZED

Back ~1978 when I matriculated 15 miles to the east, the campus myth was that whenever a virgin UNC-CH co-ed walked by the statue he would shoot his musket - hence the nickname "Silent Same".

800.

So approximately 0.125% of the student body, assuming they are indeed students, are protesting and that is news.

Wow, college students protesting on their own campus. I’d be a lot more impressed if they traveled some distance to virtue signal.

The left is declaring another sacred cow.

confederate memorials must be banished from public spaces.

They chipping away at the culture one pebble at a time.

Eventually we will be told we must avert our eyes in their presence.

In a museum

The all parrot the exact same words, don't they?

I swear I've seen/heard the word "museum" more in the last week than the previous two years.

So did “hundreds” “protest”?

Or did a few and the rest just stood around watching for the hell of it?

“prompted many to state that Silent Sam is better protected than any student on the campus.”

Maybe because he isnt spending his time wasting other people’s.

Tell the truth, Zaria. Are you really going to allow museums to display these statues of racist white supremacist slave owners?

Didn't think so.

How do other nation deal with the memories of rebels?

In Canada Louis Riel, who was hanged for treason and murder, is honored with memorials and statues.

In Australia, the Eureka Rebellion, which only lasted an hour, is remembered with flags, buildings and monuments.

In the USA, the Southern rebellion, which was figured to last only 90 days, but ended in a four year long slugfest, had statues, honors and memorials and is now looked on with horror by the latc bloomer snowflakes who want them removed.

We truly live in a mad, mad mad, mad, world.

It’s the same people, same signs, same media attention and same money being pumped into these protests. This is exactly what Obama wanted. It came later than he expected but the plan is working the same and exceeding in many cases. It does not take much imagination to foresee what the left wants next and what the ultimate goal is. If we keep on watching and sounding off in echo chambers, the left will keep rolling on.

True. That said, this particular statue is on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus... I assume the college has the right to take it down.

Teaching the young mob rule works - - and that 'history' can be destroyed might be what the University wants to 'teach'.

A better choice might be for the University to put the issue to a student vote...after a month of public debates. Teach the kids to be responsible citizens rather than vandals...

The problem with a "debate" on this subject is that one group is passionate and convinced they are virtuous and most other folks really couldn't care less.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

If it was only a ‘debate’ you would be right. The left would use their tricks and lies and win.

But the idea is to VOTE on the issue after the month of debates. And unless the liberals ‘vote the people who don’t show up to vote’ the election would fair and settle the issue.

I like 'the falcon cannot hear the falconer...' it sets the tone. Thanks for sharing cgbg.

North Carolina law says that no monuments on state land can be removed. This gives the UNC officials perfect cover to say “We want it moved too...but our hands are tied”. Even our esteemed lefty governor can’t order Silent Sam removed..but they can cry and virtue signal about it all day long.
