Lost in the intense debate over Charlottesville is a very important lesson that all Americans should learn. It has nothing to do with American politics or ideology. It has everything to do with history.
I have written three books about World War II and am currently researching a fourth. I can tell you with certainty that most people on this planet have no clue as to how German Nazis went about their lethal business. And that includes President Trump and many other politicians both present and past.
Exceptions are the Jewish people who directly experienced genocide at the hands of the Third Reich. In most Jewish homes around the world, the gruesome German atrocities are discussed and children are taught what happened in detail.
But in many American public schools, World War II and Nazism is barely mentioned. Adolph Hitler has become a caricature of evil, a distant monster.
He should be as vivid as today's sunrise.
The historical context of the Charlottesville reaction is that mass murder was carried out by ordinary Germans while the vast majority of that population looked away out of self-interest and fear. And these folks weren't from another planet. Did you know that German Americans comprise the largest ethnic group in this country?

Ones education is only as good as what is taught, and what is retained by the student.
O’Reilly is a very poorly informed man on many more levels.
He calls his pieces OPINION for a very good reason, a lack of provable facts to support them.
“But in many American public schools, World War II and Nazism is barely mentioned. Adolph Hitler has become a caricature of evil, a distant monster.”
Right on the money. We don’t teach history. We teach “social studies”. The difference? They only teach a little slice of history with a huge helping of, “now this is how you should think about it.” Anything that isn’t useful to the enforcers of public morality gets ignored.
O’Reilly does not understand that the eugenics racism that Hitler used against Jews and other classes of people, was the eugenics racism developed by southern Democrats. The Nazis used the same language word for word to justify their elimination of Jews. Both believed they belonged to the superior race and others were genetically inferior to be eliminated by the state.
Kind of like Stalin, Communism, and the Hammer and Sickle isn’t it.
If I recall correctly (it’s been a long time), I think Hitler was directly (kind of) responsible for about 10 million deaths from 1933 to 1945.
Stalin during the same period was responsible for about 25 million deaths, or more.
The figures aren’t exact because nobody knows for sure.
What percentage of the vote did the American Nazi Party get in 2016?
To repeat: “I’m not saying Nazis are a large group or are going to take over the US, but a lot of what people say about fringe groups now, isn’t so different from what they said back in the 1920s.”
Bill OReilly’s real failure is not understanding the evils of Revolutionary Communism.
Building on that...
Trump’s real failure is not understanding how evil the Progressives can be. He does not understand Scorched Earth Policies of the Left. He prolly thinks to himself that no one in their right mind would believe he would associate with Nazis and the like. But the Left are not in their right mind.
Not a good audition for the Bannon news network.
How can BOR really believe Trump does NOT understand the evil of Nazis, REALLY BILL????
Trump’s real failure is recognizing that communists are just as dangerous as their fascist cousins.
I do agree with you that fringe ideas can grow. I just think American Nazis are a pale imitation of their namesakes in Germany. The Klan wielded great power and influence in the 1920s, but it too is a pathetic shadow of a once real threat. Both are still capable of harm to individual members of minority groups, but they hardly threaten the republic.
How much of the research is done by the ghost-writer and how much by O'Reilly?
