More likely than not a person with that name over here didn’t come directly from Holland.

WRONG!

The Dutch are the ones who first settled Manhattan and many other Dutch came there, even after it was a Brit colony. If you look at the names of early families who lived and stayed there, or moved upstate N.Y. or later moved to other sates/territories, you'll find a lot of names that at Dutch!

There's a once very famous American author, Hendrik Van Loon, who had that kind of name, for example. And his family came here DIRECTLY from Holland!
