Child miners aged four living a hell on Earth so YOU can drive an electric car: Awful human cost in squalid Congo cobalt mine that Michael Gove didn’t consider in his ‘clean’ energy crusade

Picking through a mountain of huge rocks with his tiny bare hands, the exhausted little boy makes a pitiful sight.

His name is Dorsen and he is one of an army of children, some just four years old, working in the vast polluted mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where toxic red dust burns their eyes, and they run the risk of skin disease and a deadly lung condition. Here, for a wage of just 8p a day, the children are made to check the rocks for the tell-tale chocolate-brown streaks of cobalt – the prized ingredient essential for the batteries that power electric cars.

And it’s feared that thousands more children could be about to be dragged into this hellish daily existence – after the historic pledge made by Britain to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040 and switch to electric vehicles.

It heralds a future of clean energy, free from pollution but – though there can be no doubting the good intentions behind Environment Secretary Michael Gove’s announcement last month – such ideals mean nothing for the children condemned to a life of hellish misery in the race to achieve his target.

Dorsen, just eight, is one of 40,000 children working daily in the mines of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The terrible price they will pay for our clean air is ruined health and a likely early death. Almost every big motor manufacturer striving to produce millions of electric vehicles buys its cobalt from the impoverished central African state. It is the world’s biggest producer, with 60

When I worked in the hinterlands of China Fall ‘76 to Spring ‘77, I saw kids that age unloading barges on the Yangtze River. The kids wore crude woven bamboo backpacks and carried several bricks off the barge. The barges were towed up the river — not by mules, but by men pulling the tow ropes.

It was pretty shocking seeing such young child labor.

This article is really telling — greenies and libs willing to have their EV playtoys at the expense of children world wide. And that doesn’t include the huge pollution that the solar and battery manufacturing plants make in China and elsewhere.

and yet some state governments give taxpayer subsidies and special driving privileges, plus free electric recharging stations, to expand...increase the number of electric car purchases

we are (thanks mostly to Obama) subsidizing and training Muslim terrorist murder gangsters like ISIS and PLO/PA/Abbas..........and we are subsidizing these deplorable child abuse labor conditions in Africa ... (we knew Eugene Burdick, co-author of The Ugly American....and MY how our government has gotten so much WORSE since then!)

Heartbreaking.

Do you suppose the electric car fanatics even know or care about this?

I don't think we import coal.

Regardless, I'm not guilty.

I am sorry Gator I’m not sure what that’s a picture of. knowing you it is a valid response and will clear this up. I am just not sure what I am looking at.

They get the same blank look as when you remind them of the bird kills from windmills and solar. My husbands cousin was outraged to learn some airports shoot guns in the air and if necessary kill birds to keep them away from the planes. I reminded her of the windmills/ birds killed and she went bonkers on me.

Where do the greenies think the energy to charge those EV batteries comes from, unicorn farts? Also, sooner or later ththe batteries in theEV's and hydrids need to be replaced. And these aren't ordinary car batteries. Proper disposal of them can be a YUUUGE environmental problem.

Do you guys really believe 100% of this without further corroboration?

What were conditions in the mines like before electric cars?

I seem to remember that cobalt goes into a lot of aerospace materials and defense items also.

How much of the human misery is caused by their corrupt governments? If child labor were really outlawed would they use machines and the kids would starve?

Can’t say for sure, but that looks like one of the strip mines used to mine cobalt and/or lithium ... for the electric cars.

If it’s something the Left likes it involves slavery, poverty, and death.
