A US Navy sailor presumed lost at sea near Japan was found on board hiding in one of the ship’s engine rooms, Pentagon officials confirmed to Fox News.

The sailor, who works on the USS Shiloh, was found over a week after he was reported missing, triggering a wide-ranging search-and-rescue effort that stretched over 50 hours.

A Pentagon official tells Fox News Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Peter Mims is expected to be flown off the ship and given a full medical and psychological evaluation.

Shock, anger, relief. Good grief. Answer to prayer though. :)

Reminded me of Deut 20 where Moses gave Joshua rules for recruitment.

8 Then the officers shall speak further to the people and say, ‘Who is the man that is afraid and fainthearted? Let him depart and return to his house, so that he might not make his brothers’ hearts melt like his heart.’

I'm an old Army guy but I recall seeing a documentary about an aircraft carrier during which they had a "man overboard" alert. It was at night and I guess they decided that someone accidentally...or intentionally...dropped a chemical packet overboard rather than an actual crew member having gone over.

The Captain made a general announcement soon thereafter in which he warned,in a very angry tone, that anyone caught intentionally dropping those things overboard would be in a world of $hit.

One time when we crossed the Arctic Circle an officer decided he didn’t want to submit to the indignity of the Blue Nose ceremony. He was able to hide out until it was over, although we really didn’t look very hard for him. The Skipper teased him for the whole rest of the patrol that he wasn’t going to get his Blue Nose card, but relented in the end.

Does the Navy still hold drills called General Quarters?
I used to go through them, and had specific duties to perform, specific areas to be surveilled.
I suspect whatever team of enlisted assigned to search that area didn’t do a thorough job. On some vessels, that would be worthy of a Captain’s Mast trial and demotion.

Instead of “Gold Star” or “Blue Star” families do we need to start listing “Black Star” families to account for service members that pull crap like this?

I guess he needed a safe space? Hope they give him the medical care he needs. Something must have got to him.

As a Marine my unit was deployed to the Med as part of a Battalion Landing Team attached to the Navy's 6th Fleet. Upon wrapping up our tour in the Med we were re-deployed to northern Norway for an amphibious landing near Andoya, Norway. Have my Blue Nose certificate to this day, it states the lat./long position of where we crossed the Arctic circle, this was back in June of 1965.

No. I am a Gold Star sister and there is nothing anyone could do to blackball us if my family member were alive. The worst thing is there may be a very real reason for hiding. Can’t go awol from abuse in the middle of the ocean.

They will. They got him off the ship so he would not get hurt by the rest of the crew.
