I think it is more likely that the “unmasking” included Sessions and the majority of Republicants. Therefore, Sessions was coerced into stepping aside (at least temporarily). I think its quite possible a silent coup has been attempted.

Sessions needed to be able to focus on the contents of Comey’s office in order to give smoking guns to all the other deep-state cases he’s building. He knew Russia would go nowhere.
