The owner of the New York Times is the occasionally richest man on the planet, a Lebanese jerk from Mexico by the name of Carlos Slim Helu.

Whose side do we think he’s on?

Carlos Slim owns a large portion of the Class A shares (about 17%) but he has no power in running the company.

The Sulzberger family still owns 88% of the Class B shares and they run the company.

From Wikipedia (just because it was the easiest source to find):

Although Slim is the largest shareholder in the company, his investment does not give him the ability to control the newspaper, as his stake allows him to vote only for Class A directors, who compose just a third of the company's board.[87] According to the company's 2016 annual filings, Slim did not own any of the company's Class B shares.[89]
