Man Demands to Wear Pasta Strainer on His Head for Photo ID due to Religious Freedom
KFOR ^ | JUNE 1, 2017 | HEATHER HOLEMAN

An Arizona man is fighting for his right to wear his religious headwear - a spaghetti colander - in his drivers license photo.

Sean Corbett is part of the "Pastafarian" religion, a belief that a flying spaghetti monster created the universe.

According to the website of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the religion became more mainstream in 2005 after an open letter concerning the teaching of Creationism in schools.

The site states that all religions are welcome to join their community, which believes their heaven consists of a beer volcano and stripper factory.

The church recommends wearing colanders like hats in photo IDs, and many around the globe from Austria, to Australia, to the U.S., including Oklahoma, Massachusetts, and Utah, have won the right to do just that.

Now Corbett is fighting for his religious rights to don the spaghetti strainer in his photo ID in Phoenix.

"It's all about the fight. It's all about religious equality and everybody has the right to express themselves and chose their own religion. They don't have to pick from a cookie cutter religion that the Arizona Department of Transportation says is acceptable," Corbett told KPNX-TV.

Corbett says he was allowed to have his picture made wearing the colander, but was told the photo would have to be first pass a facial recognition technology system before it was approved.

"For me being able to actually convince them, go through the steps, and have it approved is huge."

Corbett was thrilled when he received his new colander photo ID in the mail, but now Arizona's Motor Vehicle Division wants to revoke it, stating that the license was issued in error.

Corbett is now searching for an attorney to represent him for religious discrimination.

I believe that the courts have already ruled that this “church” isn’t a true religion. I just can’t remember where I read it (or when).

It’s not. It’s a joke trying to make fun of believers by “new atheist” types.

Ironic thing is it’s really mainly puerile males with what we might call “Jesus issues”.

Wait until they get tickets for not having the collander when stopped ... I would allow it, but just like eye glasses, make it mandatory that it be worn when driving.

This could provide problems ‘down the road’ (pun intended). Some police departments have decided that religious gear such as this must be worn while driving and will ticket people who have such pictures on their license for not wearing it while driving.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not responsible for armed conflicts all over the world killing thousands of innocents; so how does a court rule out the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as a true religion without simultaneously ruling out vastly more absurd major religions?

I usually see about two or three of these kooks every year.
They think it’s so very clever and funny to mock someone else’s religion. Let’s see them stroll into the DMV wearing a hijab with the eye windows , and on top of their heads, fasten a pair of large devil hornlike d*ldoes, all coated in pink sparkles.
I would pay to see the reactions they get from that costume,
even bring my own popcorn.

Seems like the simple answer is to ban all religious headwear when taking an identification photo, therefore there will be no discrimination. Everyone is equal.

I don’t care what their intention is, equality before the law is a viewpoint worthy of fighting for, even if it is done by a tongue in cheek group.
