Over 100 2016 Olympic Medals Returned Due to Rust, Black Spots
Bleacher Report ^ | 5/20/17 | MIKE CHIARI

**SNIP**

2016 communications director Mario Andrada revealed the reasoning behind the medal problems.

"The most common issue is that they were dropped or mishandled and the varnish has come off and they've rusted or gone black in the spot where they were damaged," he said. "The second thing is that a small few, about 10, had problems with the extreme cold."

Andrada also called the issues "completely normal."

I guess those athletes would have had better medals out of a box of Cracker Jacks.

A good example of peeing on your leg and telling you it is raining.

40 years ago, someone would have said those medals must have been ‘Made In Japan’. Now, that would be a high compliment.

The silver and bronze medals were produced using 30 percent recycled materials.

.
Bullshit!

Real gold doesn’t rust, no matter what you do to it.

Must be chinese gold (gold plated iron)

Weren’t the Brazilians part of the BRIC’s that about ten years ago our elites tried to convince us were going to rule the world?

They can’t even get simply tokens right.

And let’s see...it’s 2017 and weren’t the Chicoms supposed to have the largest economy about a year ago?

The elites are useless. Time to start reeducating them by putting them in camps and teaching them useful and productive skills. Lte them get their hands dirty, that sort of thing.

Take it from the rest of us, manual labor is very ennobling.

Gold doesn’t discolor.

“Olympic Gold medals are required to be made from at least 92.5% silver, and must contain a minimum of 6 grams of gold.
Olympic Silver medals are required to be made from at least 92.5% silver.
Olympic Bronze medals are bronze, which is an alloy of copper with tin and zinc.
All Olympic medals must be at least 60mm in diameter and 3mm thick.”

Damage to the lacquer would allow spotted as opposed to complete tarnish to develop. the problem is silver tarnish

First place (the "Gold" medal): It is composed of silver of at least .925 grade, plated with 6 grams of gold.

Second place (the "Silver" medal): .925 silver.

Third place (the "Bronze" medal): It is mostly copper with some tin and zinc; the metal value was about US$3 in 2010.

The last series of Olympic medals to be made of solid gold were awarded at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.

Andrada also called the issues “completely normal.”

So... how many medals from former Olympics had the same problem?

I stopped caring about or watching the Olympics when the 1992 “Dream Team” invalidated everything for which the United States had stood since disgracing Jim Thorpe.

Didn’t they have to pay a huge tax for the privilege of winning such an expensive metal?
